Mark my words, this is the worst thing to happen in the history of our industry. As soon as the governments start doing this, there will be no end to their desire to control content. The Internet will become the police state that many nations have been trying to create in physical reality for centuries. Cheers, Tom Archer, Inside C# Mainstream is just a word for the way things always have been -- just a middle-of-the-road, tow-the-line thing; a front for the Man serving up the same warmed-over slop he did yesterday and expecting you to say, "Thank you sir, may I have another?"

:omg: It's Billy Tauzin. This guy has been a leading activist on the National Retail Sales Tax front for a while. He proposes that instead of the current tax system, we pay ~16% more on everything we buy. He's also a proponent of internet taxation and he keeps voting against measures to extend the moratorium on it. I honestly don't think what he proposes is going to happen.... *tentative sigh of relief*

The worst of these Bills was until recently the Burns-Wyden CAN-SPAM Act, known as the "You CAN Spam" Act because it simply tells spammers that as long as they put "ADV" in the Subject of emails they can flood the mailboxes of 92 Million Americans legally. Keep in mind some of the limitations. For example, one bill requires that spam begin with the subject line "ADV" (short for advertisement, presumably). Remember: it would be a huge boon to fighting spam if this were the case; simply filter out every email message beginning with "ADV". Any spam violating this would be violating the law. ...once spamming is legal they would be able to sue any Internet Service Providers who disconnect them for 'spamming legally'. I seriously doubt that assertion. Afterall, ISPs have an interest in limiting the amount of mail that their clients send, so I'm sure they could simply write "no spamming" into the contract and they would have a sound logical reason for doing so. ------------------------------------------ "I had no interest in trying to actually drive [in Italy], that would have been suicide. The problem is that spam email will (as it already does) severely overload the already struggling internet email system. I think it's time that someone remind the government that email is a communications tool between individuals, and was never intended to be a sales tool. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

SPAM will be legalized in one form or another. The only reason the government even cares about it is that the senators and congressmen are being bombarded by it too. If they were immune to it then it wouldn't be a problem. However, big business will make sure that everything is an Opt-Out policy. You will soon be receiving SPAM and have no recourse to it. It will be just like telemarketing, but worse because you can't not pickup the email. Get yourself some Spam filter software and be prepared to throw 95% of your email away without looking at it for the rest of your digital life. --

Email will fall out of use. Followed by SMS, IM, and every other communications tech that allows this crap. We will return to smoke signals for long-distance chatting, and in doing so blacken the sky, destroying all life above ground. Then, the machines will take over...

problem that most of Europe suffers from with over 90% of all spam hitting Europe being sent by American (mostly Florida-based) spammers. Is it just me or is Florida the cause of anti-Americanism? First they are the cause of boat-loads of old people visiting what is to them the World Theme Park (you know, Europe, Africa, Far East etc.) Second they duff up the election. And now thirdly we find out that when all those old folk are not touring the world they are running spam companies! Can't we put up a fence around Florida? Let the old-folk buses go in and but don't let anyone out.

Let the old-folk buses go in and but don't let anyone out., wait a second. Who are you and what have you done to Paul Watson.
