The problem is that spam email will (as it already does) severely overload the already struggling internet email system. Mark my words, this is the worst thing to happen in the history of our industry. As soon as the governments start doing this, there will be no end to their desire to control content. The Internet will become the police state that many nations have been trying to create in physical reality for centuries. What did I miss in the article (or not in the article) that makes you say that? Wouldn't allowing spam be the reverse of a step taken toward a police state? John

problem that most of Europe suffers from with over 90% of all spam hitting Europe being sent by American (mostly Florida-based) spammers. Is it just me or is Florida the cause of anti-Americanism? First they are the cause of boat-loads of old people visiting what is to them the World Theme Park (you know, Europe, Africa, Far East etc.) Second they duff up the election. And now thirdly we find out that when all those old folk are not touring the world they are running spam companies! Can't we put up a fence around Florida? Let the old-folk buses go in and but don't let anyone out.

The last one? The middle one? Remember email often bounces about a bunch of different servers before it gets anywhere near your ISP's server. So which server needs to be told to block all email starting with ADV for your email address? The only practical server for that is the one you dial up to get your email. But by that time the email has already hammered it's way across the internet, taking up resources as it goes. So the only machine that the blocking will help is your own machine. And you can do that already anyway. That is why Europe is going for the opt in only approach. They stop the spammer from sending unsolicited email right off the bat. America seems to be trying to stop spam at the destination, rather than the source.

I don't feel like straining my brain too much, so I will just say the obvious; I'll do the crippling, where do you want it, base of spine or everything but the left side of your mouth and your right arm? ;) I just found out that you need Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 before you can restore mailboxes backed up using Windows backup. I just found out we never got our Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 disc in march. I just found out it is a 165MB download. I just remembered why so many of us die alone, covered in pizza, with keyboard imprints on our foreheads.

And I doubt "evil spammers" will if it was ever required. 2) It requires a considerable amount of CPU work to test if a subject contains the ADV keyword which is basically unauthorized CPU utilization. Today, many ISPs with any common sense uses tools to filter spam email. It still requires a lot of CPU power to analyze an email to see if it's spam or not. Far from all are nice enough to put ADV in the subject line. :/ Spamming should be a serious offence with high fines. That's the only way to quench the spamming bastards. -- Off to San Francisco in T minus (Sunday 15th - Today) days.

It's not directly controlling, but it's a step in the direction of government controlled internet. As for gun control: People have the right to own personal firearms, but not anti-aircraft/surface-to-air missile types of munitions. It's all about moderation.
