United States Heads Towards Legalization of Spam

It's not directly controlling, but it's a step in the direction of government controlled internet. As for gun control: People have the right to own personal firearms, but not anti-aircraft/surface-to-air missile types of munitions. It's all about moderation.

What Europe is doing seems more like state control of the internet. I just wanted to establish that at some point, we are all willing to exchange some freedoms for security.

- Not all spam email uses the ADV keyword in the subject line. And I doubt "evil spammers" will if it was ever required. 2) It requires a considerable amount of CPU work to test if a subject contains the ADV keyword which is basically unauthorized CPU utilization. Today, many ISPs with any common sense uses tools to filter spam email. It still requires a lot of CPU power to analyze an email to see if it's spam or not. Far from all are nice enough to put ADV in the subject line. :/ Spamming should be a serious offence with high fines. That's the only way to quench the spamming bastards. -- Off to San Francisco in T minus (Sunday 15th - Today) days.

Actually, filtering at any point along the chain of email server hops would be fine. All hops after that would never receive the spam. As far as performance of the servers go, they already have to decide where to redirect the mail and another tiny check which would prevent passing it to the next server ought to increase performance. Basically, I'm saying that this could _decrease_ congestion. If all the major email servers started bogging down due to more spam, they would start blocking the spam in this potential easy fashion, almost wiping spam out. It is possible then that some entrepreneur could setup his own set of servers that would exists solely for spammers to pay him to route spam to the end users (who would then block it themselves). It just seems that forcing spam to identify itself would be its death-toll, whether it came quickly or slowly. John

Spam companies pay other companies to host spam applications. Just like some companies pay people to lick stamps, so spam companies pay people to send their spam. Spam is big business. The whole ADV idea is unworkable. Opt in with strong enforcement is the only way (except for my idealistic Instilling Of Better Values plan.) Anyway. I am just saying that making all servers simply block all ADV spam won't happen. It just seems that forcing spam to identify itself would be its death-toll, whether it came quickly or slowly Funny though how I think that it could be a good thing, even for the spammers. Advertisers are seeing that mass mail is not as efficient as targeted mail. Unsolicited mail gets dumped, it is a waste of the advertisers money (someone is paying these spam companies *stares at Norton*.) Targeted mail is something we actually may want, even at the compromise level. Opt in, targeted mail you can charge more for per mail than unsolicited, mass mail. A wise spammer should see that. Being honest will open peoples wallets better than by being discieving.

I don't feel like straining my brain too much, so I will just say the obvious; I'll do the crippling, where do you want it, base of spine or everything but the left side of your mouth and your right arm? ;) I just found out that you need Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 before you can restore mailboxes backed up using Windows backup. I just found out we never got our Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 disc in march. I just found out it is a 165MB download. I just remembered why so many of us die alone, covered in pizza, with keyboard imprints on our foreheads.

If everyone blocked unsolicited spam, no one would send it any more. The only thing left is the opt-in stuff which wouldn't have to identify itself as spam. Right? :D John
