So this happened a few days ago where I live. Derecho impact: Iowa continues cleanup efforts three days after storm[^] Been a right mess of a week. Anyhoo, Since my cell phone doesn't work, my internet is out and half the town is without power. I have to get myself together and drive into the office. That means putting on pants dang gummit. I have decided that I like my home office setup much better. Even if the monitor isn't as huge. Gotten used to that setup. Also, I have been thru worse natural disasters. What is the worst one you have been thru? I know mine will not compare to others. Anyway there are people worse off I know.

Well, in the middle of a heatwave we had huge hailstones. Big enough to smash the roof on my patio. It still sounds like we got off lightly, as phone and power are all working fine. Mad weather

Heard similar from several people; still, a good office should be more attractive. It should be a building that specializes in having you do what you do. If your home is more convenient for development, then your office is prolly lacking.

Flooding of the creek (heavy rain) next to our house, flooding our basement. The sewers of the village were connected to that creek, so it was rather smelly water. Our fridge was also in the basement, as well as the stock of groceries. Also; you wake up, you put on pants. First thing on my mind, is pants. Contains my wallet, keys, a clean handkerchief and a lighter. We've had floodings and fires. Always in pants. Hardly any natural disasters here fortunately.

Not at the same time of course. Flooding of the basement when I was a kid and we simply went down and cleaned, unaware of electricity. Fire's was when I was married; we lived in a cheap neighborhood and woke up coughing due to smoke. A cop took me to the ambulance for oxygen. Was rolling a smoke before getting there. But always in pants. Let nature do its' best, it will not catch me without them. No idea why men like to go without.

Superstorm Sandy. Every house in every city along the cost and well inland spent a while as part of the ocean. I've seen the obliteration caused by tornadoes - but at least the survivors have neighbors and stores and generally somewhere to go. Sandy took everything from everyone all at once. Electricity, our city's water plant literally blew up, trees toppled from high winds and totally saturated ground. And it was the end of October - a chill was beginning to fill the air. Adding to the fun - a rare November snow storm . . .

Hurricane Michael just a couple of years ago. My ISP's hub (Panama City, FL) got flattened. I live about 90 miles inland but still had lots of trees down. My power was out for only 4 days and the internet was down for about a week. My residence got through it with minimal damage but my rental suffered a large pine across the roof.

In the Netherlands we had a flooding in 1953 because the dykes broke and we're below sea level. I'm not talking wading through the water flooding, I'm talking complete houses under water flooding[^]. The older houses in town still show signs that they've been under (salt) water. Many people died. My grandparents were still young and they remember it well. It's simply referred to as (loosely translated) "the water disaster", or short "the disaster". The fact that we can just call it "the disaster" tells you how many of them we have over here, just the one :)

Nothing too bad. The October hurricane was my worst: loads of trees down, roads blocked to all vehicle for days. No electricity for a week and a half (in an all electric house with one candle - shaped like a snowman) Fortunately, the local pub had both gas cookers and Tilley lamps. And beer. Lots of beer. It also had a landlord that drank far too much and played 3-card brag really, really badly. For money ... We went home most nights pretty drunk and quite a lot richer.

Our situation was similar during Hurricane Fran in '96. Had a newborn at the time, got to experience the joy of having the eye of the hurricane pass over. That means the winds and rain are hellish, then it stops. Whew! We survived it! Then it starts again as the other side of the hurricane passes over ... [Actually, we knew about the eye, but it was a relief to have a break from the wind & rain] We had no power for 4 days during a heat wave. Fortunately friends are on the same circuit as a large hospital, so they were without power for 4 hours. We stayed with them and other friends until our power came back on. Some folks were without power for 2 to 4 weeks, and many homes were destroyed. Our worst damage was a fallen branch crushed my tomatoes. Fortune smiled upon us that night.

Hurricane Katrina, and all of the other hurricanes that have hit the New Orleans area since Camille back in the 60's. Katrina was the worst, hands down. The aftermath and flooding was terrible. I did collect 176,000.00 on my flood insurance. Needed all of it to rebuild the downstairs portion of my home (which is where my office is located).

Second Hurricane Michael. Ripped off my roof and blew some walls off the house plus 12 massive pines down. (Hiland Park/Springfield area). Pretty much lost everything in the house. Insurance was a PITA. Took over a year to get our claim properly paid. Our office building in Lynn Haven got messed up pretty bad but we finally got back into it earlier this year. My office at home pretty much got spread across my back yard. The one at work lost a wall. Luckily my office desktop survived. haha.

Link not working. Since it tries to link to KCCI, I'll assume you're in DSM. I was living there when the huge floods came through in 1993 (?). Luckily for me, I was out in NW DSM, not near any water, so for me it was just a hassle--not having water for quite some time, having to go to the water truck to fill jugs. A lot of people had their houses destroyed though.

yes des moines area. Been here since 1990. I remember 93 and searching for someplace to take a shower being the worst part of it. showered once a week my wife and I did. still managed to have a child in 94. strange
