After six years of trying to explain C++ development, I think she's given up asking what i do for a living. When her friends ask her what I do, she just says, "You, know. He plays with computers." Barry Etter

I've gave up as well Barry. If they don't actually work in the IT industry then they have no clue at all as to what you do. I don't even go into the technical side of it and my mum tells people, "He works with computers." My dad's is better, "He's a developer. He develops things."  Live to ride. It's even better when your mother tells someone that you're an engineer, and the person asks her what railroad you work for... Not that it's happened to me or anything like that... Of course not... Amazing, simply amazing... -Mike Zinni "No shit it's tough. Well, what I used as a description for my last job was "I write software that helps you count cabbage", as it was ERP software for the fruit/veg industry. I haven't got one like that for my current job (bespoke Pocket PC stuff, web stuff, etc) - I'll have to think of one. -- Ian Darling

I just tell them, and its not far from the truth, that I don't do real work because I am in meetings all of the time. I think managers are either very lonely or they like to hear themselves talk so much that they want to share the joy with as many people as possible. Well my dad is a programmer, so he understands. And my mom understands what I do by knowing that I do the same thing her husband does. But then again I don't exactly know what my mom does. She is in sales, for a clearing and forwarding company. Just what does someone like that do? She gets to play breakfast and weekend golf with clients, have lunch with clients, visit their offices and then have dinner with clients. All in all though it does not matter. So long as your mom, son, dad, daughter, sister and pet arachnid are happy in what they do, then so should you be. Oh, and proud folks are great to have :-D
