I've been rushing around like a loony trying to get things done today, and wondering where all the time has gone. Then I realized. I hadn't changed the kitchn clock to GMT this morning, so I've actually got two hours left, rather than one ... Can we please stick summer time / daylight savings in the bin where it belongs and keep the same time all year, please? It always messes me up for a week switching in or out ...

I agree, Summer Time stopped being particularly useful long ago.

It started during the Great War (aka WWI), along with another offence against true civilization - closing hours for pubs!

I agree - but let's keep the Summer Time hours - it's nice getting home in the not-dark. FWIW, I have no trouble slipping between the time changes. But, for people who are old before their time, such as yourself, I would be willing to make that concession.

Well said. This switching back and forth is ridiculous. BUT... which should we stick with permanently? GMT or BST?

That was to pay for the Napoleonic Wars. If we're still paying for that, then we've still got to pay for the Boer War before we can relinquish things associated with WW1

It would confuse the farmers and fade the cows. I would be in favour of having it all year round, especially in summer when we get day light at 4:30 in the blessed morning.

If you don't teach your cows to read the clock dial, they won't know that they last week was milked at six o'clock, this week at five o'clock. They will think of it as the same time of the day, if you do not tell them that we have changed the clock reading. Obviously, you will get the six o'clock news one hour later with winter time. But the cows don't care much about the six o'clock news.

Not surprisingly, someone has already petitioned the UK Government (there's a petition for everything!), which can be found here: Retain British Summer Time [BST] for Winter 20/21 - Petitions[^] Yes, we are too late to stop it this year, but it has to be worth a try for 2021.

We could do like China ("which we call 'Red China'") and abandon time zones. Even a small country like Norway spans two full time zones: If sunrise is at 06:00 at the very east, it is at 08:00 in the west. Should we insist on the working day starting at 08:00 both places, just because it "has to" be at the same time, by the clock? The US has always accepted that the working day starts at different times across the country, but label that time in a complex manner, like 08:00 plus a time zone indicator. The Chinese solution is rater to have a single time scale, so that some start their working day at 07:00, some at 08:00, some at 09:00, depending on where they are located. That is far easier to handle! I wish all of Europe would go for a single European time zone, so that time indications would be unambiguous. The natural choice is UTC (a.k.a. GMT). USA could of course do the same, whether selecting UTC or one of their established time zones. (UTC is probably a better choice, as the risk of confusing UTC times with the old local times is almost zero.) And at the same time we could get rid of this a.m./p.m confusion, giving all "new times" in 24h format! All of Europe has proven the ability to adjust the clock twice a year. So we should be capable of adjusting it for the very last time, to UTC, even if that may be a larger adjustment.

If you join the EU again such troubles will be gone! This might well be a repost but on a phone I will not scroll through all them posts.
