Please, but please, only read this (if you want) and post no replies. (Unless you want to embarass me). Stop with all this Linux/Windows problem. You feel comfortable with Linux and you can do your job? Perfect. So am I with Windows. Does Bill Gates says about Office 'this' and 'this'? Ok, it's his bussiness. It can be true. Install, run and evaluate. (There's always an uninstall button). Does RedHat pretend 'we are the best on server market'? Ok, I agree too. It can be true (and I'm sure they have a consistent slice of this market). Do I have a (web) server at home, or at least I am developing software in thsi area? Me, no. Does RedHat helps me writing something on Windows? No. (At least not the documentation). If you are a Linux programmer, are you interested what routines are exported from NTDll.dll? I don't think so. So? This site starts - if I remember well - for Windows (if not MFC only). So what? There are Linux guys interested to post code? It's ok for me. (Although this code is not so significant for me). They have ideas to share? Great. You can borrow something useful from Windows to use on Linux? Perfect. (Nobody says that if you are in a heavy metal band you cannot use Latin percussionists - at least Sepultura did this :) ). But to say M$ instead of MS, or, even worse, 'CRAP'... This is an insult and I take it personally. (It's not my fault that I'm from Romania, I'm not so happy. But to make me a communist, this is too much). It remains for you, people (aka Linux zealots) to make explosive Linux distribution, put 100 of them in a bag, go to a coffee shop where Windows programmer come and to throw the CD bag inside. What are you, people, a some kind of OS Fundamentalists or what?

Yeah, stop and ask yourself, "why on earth are Linux developers visiting a MS Windows programming site?" My opinion is they want to see how to program properly ;)

nah! I come here because I used to come a lot when I was a GUI\Installer\device driver writer on all Windows platforms. It's a brilliant site for Windows and I've learned a lot. I come back (now a Solaris\Linux developer) just to keep up with the developments in Windows. I thought Win2K was brilliant when it came out and I wrote tons of apps and drivers for it. I fear for the future though with WinXP and I'm glad I'm not a Windows developer any more. I also find the Linux\Windows battles funny because when all's said and done you can make more dosh out of Windows apps 'cause more folks are using it. That said, more and more devlopment is moving to the web and I relish the coming C#\Java battle. Keep up the great postings peeps! Le gach deagh dhurachd

          > But to say M$ instead of MS, or, even worse, 'CRAP'... This is an insult and I > take it personally. Why are you taking it personally? As far as I know, you can still write Windows apps without necessarily running Windows as your OS. There's at least three difrerent ways to run Win98 or Win2K (or their non-game apps) under Linux. We all have bitched and complained that MS is a monopoly in the PC OS market, and the only viable way to assure the end of that status is to make sure Microsoft has a viable competitor. Linux is the ONLY OS that is even close to being that competitor, and Microsoft knows it. If they do manage to crush Linux under their jackboot, we will ALL suffer for it. Unfortunately, Linux (through its users and developers) shows no desire to consolidate their efforts, address the open-source issues that are holding back commercial software development, and address ease of use and installation, reliability, and hardware compatibility issues. Until all of that happens, we'll all be squirming under the burdon of a bloated un-interesting Windows OS that costs WAY too much. I've said it before - Windows is a great idea (for many reasons), but I refuse to spend $299 for XP Pro - I just don't see a compelling reason.

I'd aggree with you on the price thing. $299 is way too much. And knowing the way these things work it'll be £299 over here :( Although if I was still grappling with Win9x I might be a bit more inclined to upgrade.

Wow, $299 is way too much? 10 years ago I would have given my right arm to just pay $299 for an OS with all the features of XP. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

Ahh yes, but our expections are somewhat higher now. How much was a copy of DOS/Windows 3.1 10 years ago?

Heh, I wonder if I could use that argument with my car dealer. "What? You want $24k? 10 years ago I only paid $10k for a car with just a 10th of the features of this car! This is robbery!!!!" Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.
