Alain Prost[^] was the greatest French Formula 1 racing driver, winning four world championship titles (only Fangio, Schumacher and Hamilton have won more). Some commentators rank him as possibly the greatest driver of all time. "The French" was both a mis-direction (not la or le as usual) but also a hint that we are talking about a very specific French driver.
