Open your eyes. It's not about trust. It's the latest MS strategy to get attention from enterprises, and another way improve revenues (License 6.0, etc.). More to the point about IT and corporate people which are as everyone knows spending a lot of money (corporate policies) regarding anything related to viruses. AV is also seen as a way to make people more and more stuck to Windows Update. Still free these days, but who knows what's going to happen by 2005? May be the Windows update service is soon asking a fee. The trouble is, Microsoft is soon asking "customers" to pay to get binaries and other updates they didn't even want in the first place. It sounds much like the Office system product strategy where you'll have to pay for the entire product line (including server products), even if the only thing you need is an upgraded word processor. As a side effect, it's also killing the AV market. My thought of the day is : yes, Microsoft came up in Feb 2002 with an incredible tool to improve productivity (VS.NET), but soon Microsoft will leave virtually no market to build software from (email software, MP3/MP4/streaming software, AV, ...). Unless we are talking about personal projects of course (or CP² stuff...).

They would be making us download a patch from Windows Update so that it can be caught by the AV, so we have to update our AV defs, so we get a patch from Windows Update to protect against the latest virii, and the .... StackOverflowException

I don't see this as a bad thing. Microsoft will end up providing anti-virus for those to stupid to go out an buy it e.g. AOL users, wo have out names in their in boxes, and continually are used to send other people junk, and spread viruses. There are stupis people out there who use no personal filewall or anti-virus, and these are the poeple they will end up targeting. Everyone else will use products such as Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm etc, becuase they have some brains, where as Microsoft get a bad wrap beucase some of its customers have no idea. And don't say its Micorosoft's products, because if Linux went mainstream on the desktop in people homes, do you really think some granny is going to rebuild here kernal, to patch some new attack some deamon she did not even know existed?

Eh... So instead of selling dodgy software that makes Windows even more flakey than usual, AV companies can focus on selling products that enhance the basic service provided with Windows. Maybe offer a better signature update service. OR, MS throws their weight into it and tries to drive other AV companies out of the market by giving the product and service away. Either way, i don't really care. I don't run AV software. Something about it leaves a bad taste in my mouth, not to mention killing my machines' performance. Like filesystem compression and defragmentation (both markets MS has "stolen" in the past), this is something i'd expect my OS to be doing for me anyway. Norton has existed for years filling the gaps in MS software. If anyone thinks AV software is the only, or the biggest gab left, please contact me about some prime Florida real estate i happen to be selling...
