We name cats when they are kittens, and we have no idea what they are going to end up like. The "G" became a "J" in the spelling so vets wouldn't think his name was "Dig". But now, I'd have gone for a political theme: "Mousie Tong" because he's so predatory ... How do you name your pets?

You could have chosen a more strongly-typed name; perhaps "Boo" (for boolean) if he was indeed on or off. (Or "Boo!" if you're sure it will never be undecided...) If it's an "outdoor" cat it helps to be a name you don't mind shouting at midnight at the top of your voice. If you think there's any chance the cat might take notice of you, a name that's easily identifiable (by a cat) - so something short and with a hissy sound can be good. Ours have been Sunny, Misty (based on colour), Sula (Icelandic for Gannet, due to greed), Wizzy (Harry Potter was "in", and the kitten was faaaast), and now Dusty (colour again) and Skipper (he has a white mark on nose like a skipper butterfly).

My last three feline companions were named after Greek gods, simply because I was reading a Greek mythology book at the time. I settled on Zeus, Athena, and Ares. The ol' doggie was picked up from a shelter with the name "Jack" and I just left it that way. The fish is just known as "Fishy." I was waiting on the kids to come up with a proper name, but my temporary name became permanent. He doesn't seem to mind. :-O

After many, many years as a musician, I name the dogs after musicians, bands, or songs. Our current hounds are named Angus Young, Whole Lotta Rosie (Rosie for short), Mustang Sally, and Jethro Tull. The previous hounds were Maxwell Silverhammer and Eleanor Rigby. We usually get cats in groups of two or three and names usually come from movies and TV. The last batch were all males so they became Larry, Curly, and Moe. Prior to them were two females and they were Thelma and Louise. We got a lone female before them and as a kitten she had a face like an alien and was all white so we called her Roswell. The male prior to her looked like a rat when he was small so we call him Usel (from Dune.) Our Dachshunds have had two litters of pups. The first were named Bob, Carol, Ted, and Alice. The second were named Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty. The Ridgebacks have had two litters and they were so big we didn't name them. That is, except for one female who was really, really smart. She could get and out of their pen and we didn't figure out how until later. We called her Houdini.

The dog was named by animal control (originally wrote pound but not sure if that translates outside America) so he's Louis (pronounced Louie) First cat was similarly named when brought home from animal control, Sampson it was. That Maine Coon is the only animal I really miss. Current cats, Anastasia named by the daughter from the cartoon. Ollie, him I don't remember but it had to be one of my boys' doing. When the current pets shed their mortal coil we will not be replacing them, unless I was to find a Maine Coon kitten.

Monsieur - Male cat because he was Franchman-level snotty Angus - Male cat, fat, all black like the cows; great snuggler with me, hated everybody else Bacchus - Male greyhound, named for the Greek/Roman god of wine and revelry; we chose his name _before_ the adoption folks told us he didn't bark, he only whined Hera - Female greyhound named for the wife of Zeus, aka Boss Lady; she's the dominant of the two dogs, and loves to tell B what to do Canada - All-white female cat, looked like an ambulatory snow bank (even in summer) Guccina - Female black cat. A feminized form of "Gucci", she was named after the fashion designer because she looked so elegant. Cali - My daughter's female calico cat. I called her "Cali-Whumpus" (alliterating caddy-whumpus) because she always tumbled off furniture. Treble - My wife's dachshund was originally named "Trouble" when she got him, which she though was bad karma. She renamed him "Treble". It didn't help. Pet names deserve consideration, and should always come with good stories.

I name mine after tyrants and otherwise failed leaders. Like Chairman Maow, and Groucho Mugabe. I got the idea from my friend who named her cats Nixon and Reagan and I thought it was the best thing ever - naming cats after political figures and heads of state so...

Fun fact, Dij is pronounced as die in the Netherlands and dij is the Dutch word for thigh. I name my pets after animals in books or movies. Jiji is from Kiki's Delivery Service, even though she isn't black like the original Jiji[^]. I grew up with a Siepie, who I named after the cat from the popular Dutch children's books Jip & Janneke[^]. The other cats I had were named in the animal shelter.

I'll let you guess the rule used for naming my chickens based what the results are. It all came about because one of the people who delivered our first ones decided to call one of them 'Ava'. 1st batch * Ava * Bertha * Clarissa 2nd batch (a few years later whilst A, B and C were still with us) we were given some more chickens by someone who could no longer house them. They were called * Dora * Edna * Flora When we moved to rented accommodation, we had to give away A, B, D, E and F (C had gone to the big coop in the sky). Having moved to a new home, we have at long last got some new ones; so, continuing the naming rule, we now have 3rd batch * Glenda * Hilda * Isla * Julia and a few weeks later, a neighbour found a stray, who is now called * Kira
