LukeV wrote: How many people here have a full time job and a home business? I had, several years ago. LukeV wrote: Why do you do it? Everyone that runs its own business, run it for the fun of it and for the money. It's just like programming: I do for the fun and for the money. How do you guys manage both things? I've tried managing both, and I quit my job after a few months. At that time, the only mouth to feed was mine, so I took the risk. And I never regreted it. If I stayed on my job, I would never put on my business enough effort to make it run. Now I clearly see that running a business means working 12x7 for several months long. It was simply incompatible with my job. ORACLE One Real A$#h%le Called Lary Ellison

I think that the only good thing on it is that I have no competitors now, and I think that the economy will scare them for a while (it's too risky now). ORACLE One Real A$#h%le Called Lary Ellison

How many people... I do. I work full time for a company that produces software for document storage warehouses. On the side, I own Liquid Mirror Enterprises - software, ebooks, sites (such as Shareware Junction, the BX/Free Banner eXchange, SWJ/BX Banner eXchange, Crush Alarm, etc), and more. I'm also a part-time therapist. Why do you do it? 1) I need the extra income to keep my kids in private school. 2) I love it! Whould you rather work exclusively for your business... It's a life-long dream, and will happen one day. ;-) How do you guys manage both things? Basically, no social life. LukeV wrote: If so, what kind? I own several rental properties and plan on getting a small apartment complex in the next 2 years. LukeV wrote: Why do you do it? Because I want to retire by the age of 40 :) .. LukeV wrote: Whould you rather work exclusively for your business or you like it that way? I like it how it is now. It doesn’t take a lot of time to run the business and I’d be terribly bored not dealing with technical problems. But, I like doing the matience on the houses myself, it keeps me active and helps to relax my mind when I can't stop thinking about a programming issue. The biggest problems are the occasional renters that don't pay their rent and try to hide when I serve them with notices or summons. Hey don't worry, I can handle it. I took something. I can see things no one else can see. Why are you dressed like that? - Jack Burton

I have a full time job working for a small firm who contracts my services to a Fortune 100 Company. I used to work for that F100, but left after 4.25 years. I went out of state and returned 1 year later as a contractor. I have been in this position for the past 7.5 years. I too have a home based business. LukeV wrote: If so, what kind? Custom software development, web page design, consulting. I developed and sold Pocket PC software in the past. I ran PocketSoftFactory.com for 2 years. LukeV wrote: Why do you do it? Satisfaction. The fortune 100 company that I contract to is not the technology mecca of the world. I did it to learn new technology. I also have done it for the money and....that little dream of working for myself in the future. LukeV wrote: Would you rather work exclusively for your business or you like it that way? The little firm that I work for has been very good to me. I would rather work for myself though. LukeV wrote: ...but I don't have enough time to acomplish anything fast! How do you guys manage both things? I understand! I have 3 children and a beautiful wife. When I ran PocketSoftFactory.com I would often be up during the week until 3 am. I then got up at 6:30 and got on the road to do the office thing. It was tough. I learned to drink lots of coffee and nap a little on the weekends. If you believe in your product and are having fun, go for it. :) Wayne
