I saw an article claiming that the new apple machines that will be announced on Monday as part of their developer conference will be sporting 1Ghz system bus speeds. Currently the dual proc apple I have has a 167Mhz bus speed. Don't know what my pc has. Assuming this is true, isn't this pretty high? How does this stack up against what pcs are currently running at? ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)!

High end Pentium 4's run at 800mhz (200mhz 4 times), most of what you see about the new apples is rumors. Apple is normally very good at keeping their anouncements secret. I would be shocked to say the least if thay managed a 1ghz fsb.

Check out the Register [^]. I guess Apple accidently posted an add to their website that had the G5 system specs a little early. -Scott

They're also advertising CPU speeds as high as 2ghz, when IBM has claimed a top speed of 1.8ghz on the new PPC970 chip. Either IBM improved their performance without announcing it, or apple is overclocking the chips. Either way, I'd love to get my hands on a G5 with dual 1.8's. :) ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

I wonder if they really will update the powerbook. I'm much more interested in the powerbook, mine is getting a bit old.

I think the article said they would be announced Monday, as for a launch date who knows. They aren't officially called the G5 yet, that will also happen Monday.

I just began digging into some of the overclocking stuff where you get deep and intimate with bus speeds and electrical voltages. On AMD they are cooking at 333 with one new chip running at 400 (this is with doubling multipliers), memory (DDR) is at the 400Mhz clock cycle now, and video seems stuck at 166. Pentium presents a faster FSB by presenting four paths or multipliers. So a true FSB of 200 would potentially yield an 800 FSB speed. The quad multiplier is required so that the pentium, with all of its' bugs and register reloads, can run at the same speed as a dual channel AMD chip. _____________________________________________ The world is a dangerous place.
