A news item on TV news last evening, something along these lines: "The city of San Francisco is planning to pay criminals to not shoot people" What?? :omg: The next move for all criminals is obvious: Move to SF! San Francisco will pay criminals $300 a month NOT to shoot other people in desperate plan to tackle surging gun crime[^]

Get me coffee and no one gets hurt!

It has a name: protection money. Bitcoin, I bet; it has made all around crime more viable.

Pablo Escobar was among the richest people in the world. Crime pays A LOT if you do it right. It's a high risk, high reward[^] kind of thing.

Maybe if SF had actually managed their police force better they wouldn't be paying criminals.

Of course! Pay the cops, not the criminals! Is that so difficult to understand?

What can I say? Current policies in California have turned what used to be jewels of cities (admittedly, with a nasty underside) into lawless slums that I wouldn't dare visit, even with a Special Forces unit backing me up. The squandering of so much treasure and potential with so dismal a result is beyond tragic.
