    GIF is freed from its (Unisys) patent, as of June 20. Enjoy. PNG has still crap IE support as of date.

        IIRC, it's just in the U.S. I believe the patent is still in effect for one more year in other countries.

            Can they renew the patent? There are people who pay because of the patent. If it is possible to renew wouldnt they? It seems silly not to if they were making money off it. Sorry if its a silly question I dont know much about them.

              Mark A wrote: Can they renew the patent? probably not. renewing a patent is not an easy thing to do; it's not a matter of just paying a fee, like renewing a driver's license; as i understand it, they basically have to come up with a new use for the same technology, and then it can be patented for that new use. and, obviously it's tough to make the new use overlap the old use in such a way that people can't use the tech for either. CheeseWeasle

                That's right. Software patents (patenting ideas, not products) was "invented" by americans. I don't know if this gets to propagate through Europe[^]. I know that if it did, it would stifle innovation, and allow big players to screw small ones.
