In another thread I made a comment regarding making popcorn to watch the Win11 rollout, and it occurred to me that the reference may not translate outside of the USA. In the USA, it's common to eat popcorn while watching movies in the theatre, and often at home as well. The reference "make popcorn" is used when observing humorous and/or otherwise entertaining situations that the folks directly involved may not find so humorous, although often it's a situation of their own making. Is this reference common outside the USA?
Never heard it over here in the Netherlands, but we know the German saying "schadenfreude ist die schönste freude" :-\

We eat popcorn here in Norway, but I have never heard the expression used in that sense over here. On the other hand, most Norwegians will know of the comedian Oluf, from North Norway, with a very rough kind of humor, like when he tells "TV? No, there is no TV where we live. If we need entertainment, we throw the cat into the washing machine and watch it through the front glass door when we start the machine ..."

The reference is known but it gets lost in the French translation. But I use it as well on English speaking forums, we French know how to adapt to lower-level cultures *grabs popcorn and sits down*
