When a multi-billion corporation with the resources of Microsoft even has a development environment that allows the creation of a dialog that has the only button disabled, I think I'm right to be less than impressed. I don't even know if this IS an error. It tells me nothing whatsoever of use and doesn't provide any advice or guidance on where to find further assistance or to help me resolve the problem. The dialog itself is not draggable, does not allow the message to be copied to the clipboard, does not follow acknowledged best practice for message box styling, etc.. etc.. And since we're discussing MS's stupidity at this point, how about the fact that if I search for "install XBox Game Bar" I get to the MS page about XBox Game Bar, with a big button saying "Get" at the right. here[^] If I click on that "Get" button, eventually (i.e. after quite a few seconds) another window opens, with (apart from a slightly different menu) exactly the same logo, heading, text and "Get" button. It's like nothing has happened. WTF is that all about? I have to hit "Get" again which, I assume, downloads the application and then the Get button changes to "Install". When I click on "Install", nothing happens. Absolutely zilch, zero, nada... nothing. The cursor doesn't even change. No new window, no message pop-up, absolutely nothing. There are three dots to the right of "Install", which, if I click, opens a single "submenu" item "Install on my devices". Well, I'm hardly in a position to install on someone else's devices, am I - or is MS se

I'm sure it will amuse you even more that when I click on the first "Get" button, it opens the store (?) with a message "The thing you're looking for isn't here - we probably don't have it, but just in case, try searching for it". I gave up.

Do we have any tools packaged with windows 10? I couldn't find a proper screen recorder. Google takes me to expensive options. For mac, it's available https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208721[^] Any similar free tools available for windows?

My work bought Snagit [^] for me and it's a simple and easy to use program with decent annotating tools. But it's not exactly free. :^)

I feel your pain - I've been through similar hoops when trying to download a free program that claims to work on a PC. Trouble is that the Windows Store only downloads to mobile phones, not PCs.

Not free, but not expensive either, Golden Records have something called (IIRC) Debut.

Nand, I realize you want something free. Techsmith offers Capture (or did). Also, I ended buying SnagIt (and I also own camtasia). As a professional, sometimes I have to absorb the price of tools. In my case, I use SnagIt DAILY, so it's a no brainer. It does fixed screen, and movies of screen with various microphone/audio settings. It will do what you want, and works quite well... Shame on SnagIt for creating Jing (A wonderfully easy tool), and killing it because of flash, instead of creating a hackathon around replacing it with an MP4 generator. Capture sucks by comparison to Jing. But I believe they were losing SnagIt sales to Jing Users, and the push to replace flash output was just too hard to justify in a free tooL!

Well, Microsoft does/did have some crappy error messages. One I got when trying to do a Windows 10 update a couple years ago said: "Something happened". That was the total error message, no error codes, no info on what what it might have been working on.

I've used Debut professional by NCH for many years to produce user instruction tutorials for Apps/Systems that I developed. The most important issue that I found was to get a high enough resolution so that users could read the fine print and that the media format used was common across most devices and that the streaming file wasn't gigantic. For example user's need to be able to read the individual items in a DropDown List on a busy screen. Debut professional configured to record in .mp4 provided very good results in a common format. Whilst there is a cost there is also a trial version that you can test and evaluate. /*It always looks impossible till it's done */

That's a new one on me. I followed the instructions, hit Win-G and got a little pop-up message that says "You'll need a new app to open this ms-gamingoverlay link". It's got an OK button that is disabled, and nothing else. Now, I've not clicked a "link", I've pressed a Windows key combination. OK, so I'll need a new "app" - what one and where do I find it? Or even how do I find what application? (and don't patronise me by dumbing everything down to "apps") WTF is the point of showing me a dialog with one button that's disabled!? Until recently, I used my free copy of Jing (from TechSmith) to record voice-annotated movies, which it saved as Flash files. That is, of course, until Microsoft deleted tools for playing Flash - without my consent or notification, on the basis they were "insecure". Including the ones I'd created myself or had proven safe from many years ago.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: PS apologies for going off at a massive tangent. But if something's free and "included" with Windows, why doesn't it work????

I second that. I've created videos for Pluralsight using OBS Studio, so it's a perfectly fine bit of software. The best part about it is you can mix EVERYTHING If your PC can see it or hear it, it can record it and/or live stream it. I routinely produce videos for the local history club where I put a green screen behind me, mask out my background, then lay the computer screen on that, while I have my Web Camera image of myself down in the bottom corner. I've also used it to mix in Skype/Zoom/Teams etc into my live desktop and camera to produce multi person cameras. If you have several monitors, you can set each monitor up for different parts, then seamlessly switch between them, it's a doddle to do, and stupid powerful for what it is.
