Long ago, in a galaxy far away.. Some time ago for me at least. There was this co student that could hardly see anything. His color scheme in W3.1 was Yellow/Black, something he could see clearly, and became a programmer. I always adhered to the Windows color scheme, so that bright and dark do not clash; never did I allow marketing outside the lines. Color safe is black and white. If you don't know better, then use the predefined colors of Windows, and stick to their theme. I see it everywhere; machines where you could get a ticket as a blind man, replaced by a "touch screen". Never seen a blind man operate those. I am ashamed of this generations' idea of "IT".

No idea what the "predefined colors of Windows" means. For this one app, I need 21 (sensible) colors. Topographic elevations. For those that can't "see colors", they'll have to interpret contour lines. Gray scale may be an (unattractive) option.

Thanks for the "safe" explanation; "compatible" was probably too technical or taken.

Green, because green is the colour which tends to be the most visible to the human eye at the lowest intensity (which is why electronic night vision tends to be green meaning a lower battery usage than red which is a colour that helps to preserve night vision).

Never asked, but may explain all the IBM 3270 "green" VDT's and the original PC green monitor. I went for an "amber" display at one time ... and still have it. And the PC.

I remember those amber dumb terminals back in the 80s and early 90s.

If you have PowerToys installed, tapping Control key twice puts a handy little temporary spotlight around the cursor. I tap once to get the sonar rings, or twice for the spotlight -- very handy for my old eyes

I'd forgotten about them. Used them for "TrueType" way back when.

This is an issue for me as well. I lost my right eye last year after a fall. My left has problems with contrast, especially with small light items against a dark background. I've had to set my mouse cursors much larger than the default in addition to setting the color. My only grief at this point is using 'normal' machines at work. I've had to ask people to find the mouse cursor for me when I lost it :-O  .

3 monitors and a lazy eye. They always say: "No, over here!"

I've more-or-less lost the benefit of multiple monitors, at least when they're 22" or smaller which is what I have at work. At home I replaced my 20" with a 24", and that's worked pretty well.

Most devs don't, and marketing doesn't want to hear about it. Hit start, settings. "Ease of Access" applet. Go to "high contrast". Turn it on, choose a theme. Now, if you develop desktop apps, this is why we have predefined windows-colors that relate to those boring windows-settings. :)

Just discovered you can set the color of the mouse pointer (hand, etc.) in Windows 10; also makes for a better "beam" in VS, Notepad, etc. I chose Magenta; you can customize any color. ("Cursor and Pointer" under Settings) I never noticed this option before; it may be a function of the mouse. My wired one gave out and I paired a Bluetooth (MS "Designer") mouse I had around from a few years back (for some reason). I find the color better for me than the default when hunting for it. (While I prefer wired, this mouse seemed to get better with time ... or it was me)

I have it set to "Windows inverted", so it's always the XOR of the colour it's over. I find it much easier to find that way.

I don't know how long it's been there, but Windows 10 has an "Inverted" option for the mouse pointer color. What it does is show the pointer as the inverted color of whatever is below it. I find that's the best for me because a white pointer never hides on white backgrounds; ditto for black backgrounds.

I've been setting my mouse to "inverted extra large" for years. "Inverted" so it's opposite to whatever color it is over, and "extra large" makes it even more obvious.

On my work computer, I prefer the unobtrusive plain white standard cursor. On my home computer, which is also connected with my tele on the other side of the room, I use red bc it's easier to spot when sitting far away from the screen.
