Win 11 clean install, take 2.

Nope, I want a clean install - I suspect this installation still has Win XP code in there somewhere, it's been upgraded that often ... :laugh: And changing the main monitor affects loads of things - notably games which I don't want to play on a tall, thin landscape monitor. In Win 10, you could "Unlock" the taskbar, drag it to the side, or a different monitor and then lock it there. It just worked. This new one isn't centered properly, so I have to have it over to the left or it'll be like staring at the mirror that isn't level and my eye will start to twitch again!

OK, so this morning MS decides to let me update to Win 11. So it let it, and it all goes smoothly. A new glitch pops up with the new taskbar: you can't drag it to the side or to a different monitor in a multiple setup. Apparently the only way to move it is to change which monitor is the "main" one which means that boot problems will come up rotated 90o on my landscape monitor, and all games will play on the wrong one. No, thank you ... Another MS decision that degrades usability. :sigh: I'll learn to live with it even though I keep trying to check the time in the wrong place. So I'll create a Win 11 installation USB and off we go. Nope, it decides "this PC cannot run Win 11" even though it's just upgraded to it ... :doh:

My understanding is that this isn't as much of a glitch as it is a limitation. Apparently they're aware of the "problem" and proper functionality will be restored "in a future release". No ETA (that I'm aware of) that they've committed to.

Waiting and not seeing it; they currently move in the other direction: There has already been a registry trick to restore left/right taskbars (with an occasional Explorer crash), however they now have disabled all of that. :rolleyes:

Yeah, the taskbar thing is rather irksome to me too - we've all been using these super-wide monitors for, what, over a decade now? And have a look at most websites: content in the middle 1/2 (or even less!) and whitespace all around. This phenomenon isn't exclusive to the web either. I used to tack my taskbar to the right of the main monitor (where I have a browser open) and no taskbar on other monitors, because I want _all_ the real-estate for code. Now I have 5% less vertical space (that I could have actually used) and all this wasted horizontal space. Good one, MS.

I *think* the mouse is original Logitech Trackman Wheel, but it's possible that was replaced ... It's a bit like the old saying: "best axe I ever owned: only 7 hew handles and 5 new heads since I bought it!" Slowly but surely, over the years, it's had a new case here, a new PSU there, here a motherboard, there an SSD, "oh, the CRT monitor died - I'll get an LCD" over there. If I'd saved all the bits, I'd have a bigger pile of dead or redundant computer parts than I do now ... :laugh:

In other words, you haven't done a clean install of Windows since XP? That's an admirable feat. :-D I built my current rig just after Weven came out, and I did a clean install then. I'll have to disable the fancy CPU security thingy before I upgrade to 11, 'cause I'm not about to try and build a new machine with today's prices.
If you think 'goto' is evil, try writing an Assembly program without JMP.
