How many lines of code have you guys written so far in your life? I'm estimating I've written about 1 million lines . That might not seem a lot to people who have been at this since the sixties ;) but I still think that its a lot. -Oz --- Grab WndTabs from http://www.wndtabs.com to make your VC++ experience that much more comfortable...

Boy, that is really hard to say. But a 1,000,000? Even the best programmers only produce 100 lines of working code a day. (From a study many years ago. The average was 5 lines of working code a day.) That comes out to 26,000 lines of working code a year given 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Would take 38 years for the best of us to product 1,000,000 lines of code. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

I don't tend to count the how many lines of code I do. It's a bit of a pointless exercise, some days you can write 40 lines of code only to delete a 100 lines the next day. A more fun exercise is count the number of bugs you've introduced into a product, when you total all those that gets worrying :-) Michael :-)

Well, I can easily acount for about 1/2 million (WndTabs, major projects at work - past and present). I'm assuming that all the others add up. > The average was 5 lines of working code a day.) Hm.. Last time I heard, assembler programmers do 5 lines/day on average, not C++ (results will vary :)). For me, like eveyone - lines/day vary. For instance, now I'm doing a new feature (around 500+ lines/day). Other days it can drop to 50. Weekends are above average... -Oz --- Grab WndTabs from http://www.wndtabs.com to make your VC++ experience that much more comfortable...

I figure judging myself based upon the number of lines of code I've written would be about the same as expecting God to judge himself based upon the number of lines of text in the bible :) Some of us are simply beyond being measured by the puny limits of the mortal mind. (Besides, I keep losing count :(( ) "Want to know what makes me mad? The figures for ave. lines/day, include the time that developers spend during design, and debugging stages. So even if you are doing 500/day right now, there will be days that you do not do anything but debug and rewrite (also rewriting code is not counted!!) Also the latest figures I have are between 16-20 per day for C++ developers.

I believe in quality not quantity! I have written software in the past that only contains one tenth the code of a competing product. Does this mean their product is better because of the lines? Or does this mean that their product has the potential of 10x the number of bugs, and 10x the work to maintain? Troy

That's a tough one. Some of my components and apps I've rewritten from the ground up several times (yeah, one day I'll start designing before I start coding ;)), and some projects are modifications of existing work, where you modify half a line, or cut out 10 lines and add back 2. An interesting stat would be: (No. of lines of code you've written still in existences) / (No. lines written overall) The Mozart of computer programming would have this figure close to one. The Chris Maunder of programming would have this figure close to the other end of the scale. cheers, Chris Maunder (CodeProject)

I will agree with that, althought it depends on the job. I was working once for a huge company (about 160,000 staff in total and 3,000 developers world wide) and to comply with ISO 9001 standards the procedure was in place that would effectively make you writing 5 lines of code per week, but at the same time you would write few pages about those lines - what they do etc...

I look for ISO 9001 signs at potential employers offices, and run. As you'd know, ISO guarentees nothing about quality except consistency, and does that by generating wads of useless paperwork.
