Got out of bed at 06:00, grabbed the laundry baskets, made and drank my :java: Brushed teeth, had a shower, loaded the washing machine. "Odd." I thought. "That felt like there was a lump in that load." About to press "Start" when I thought I'd just check to be on the safe side. And found my phone in the washer ... :-O Don't think that would have helped it much, even with the antivirus liquid I wash Herself's clothes in (Old Folk Homes are breeding grounds for nasties like Norovirus, nearly as bad as Primary schools). Let's try being awake next time, eh Griff?

As long as the lump does not turn out to be the cat...

I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats. His last invention was an evil Lasagna. It didn't kill anyone, and it actually tasted pretty good.

In theory, yes - But well, shit happens, they were playing, and I am not the kind to run after people for money. And my time is more valuable than the 10 hours to get the insurance working. So ... :-D /edit : And I only buy cheapos phones to my kids just because of that.

It was one - turns out it cannot resist a swimming pool dive. The inside of the phone did not suffer water damage, but it seems the LCD display itself did not like water, could also be she hit it by falling.

Did it go deep? The pressure might do nasty stuff to a phone. Reminds me that my old phone was only allowed to be used below 4000 m.

Very sensible! How do you convince them the cheap ones are fashionable enough? Parents everywhere want to know ... :-D

I do not think phone fashion is still a thing - As long as they can snapchat/instagram/whatsapp/whatever like and with their friends, they are OK. Maybe it could come later when power is needed for gaming or expensive phones are an attractiveness multiplicactor, but I am not there yet.

A quick check gives 1m for IP67 and 1.5m for IP68. Those numbers are for 30minutes though.

... ok, the rednote 10 is IP53, which is nowhere near "waterproof" ... so I might have overestimated the specs.

That means it's rain protected. You probably want IP67 (Protected from immersion between 15 centimeters and 1 meter in depth.) or IP68 (Protected from long term immersion up to a specified pressure.) I've noticed that the specified pressure is usually just marginally better than IP67

Unfortunately I don't get quiet morning hours for work these days. My work laptop is set up to show who's online, and there's no way I've found yet to prevent that aside from unplugging the network cable. Therefore my quiet morning hours simply don't involve anything for work that can't be done offline. I get a lot of reading done, mostly Stuart Woods, Randy Wayne White, John Sandford and Janet Evanovich these days.

I haven't had anything go "clunk" in the washer recently, but I am routinely p***ed off when she leaves kleenex in pockets. Most of my garments are cotton, which has a lovely "cling" factor for shredded tissue.

And then she complains that YOU should of cleaned out HER pockets.

I’ve given up trying to be calm. However, I am open to feeling slightly less agitated.

Note to Griff, Be Sure Coffee has started working before working on anything. As for herself or anyone else leaving things in pockets. Many years ago instituted a finders keepers policy on laundry in our household. IT has worked wonders. For a few years though I almost financed a few vacations off found money. Eventually it sinks in though. :)

Yesterday the wife asked me to call her phone as she could not find it, called but could not hear the ringtone, silly so and so had it on silent so we spend the next 20 minutes checking every flat surface where it could be, nothing. Just as it starts raining (we live on a acreage in tropical Queensland and it is the rainy season) I wander down the back and there it is sitting on a pot plant - and the skies opened up. It survived but must have been a close thing.

Found out many years ago the detergent will indeed destroy the phone. Tried washing phones at both 40 ang 60 degrees with the same result, so the detergent is the only thing in common of the two tests I can think off.

She wouldn't have noticed for a couple of weeks - it's normally flat as a pancake every time I check because she rarely uses it. She's on her tablets most of the time (one to play on, one charging). I've got to replace her phone later this year as they are disconnecting 3G in January and it predates 4G ... That'll be fun: teaching her to unlock a new phone: "Fingerprint? Where's the ink pad?" A Luddite I'm afraid. :sigh:

She's a clever girl, so this would even be likely. That's how you become a super villain some time later :-D

What were you thinking? Got out of bed - that was your first mistake! Secondly the secret to a happy life is delegation. Domestic chores not involving tools should be delegated to Herself. (a) She's probably cleverer and more astute than you (women often are, in a quiet way) and thus not likely to launder your phone (not even by accident), and (b) if she does perchance make that mistake you at least have someone else to blame.

Back in the day I had a not-smart phone that I put through the washer and dryer twice. The first time through lost me all sound, so I had to keep the phone in my pocket to feel it ring. The second time through returned the sound with no additional damage. They don't make things like they used to, but I sure do prefer my Galaxy to that old thing
