Nothing, nor is there a change in the excess.

I just got my car insurance renewal notice, and expecting the worst I opened it. £3.09 less than last year ... and t'interwebs says insurance has risen by £68 a year on average since April ... plus second hand car values are still climbing post Covid. And I haven't crossed any magical age barriers: I was 62 last year, and I'm still 63 this year; I live in the same place; drive the same car; still work from home; have max no-claims. That just doesn't happen: Insurance only goes down when you switch companies! And it's probably not worth my time looking round for a better deal: it's less than £200 for the year already with protected no-claims and windscreen cover - so I'll save maybe an extra couple of quid if I'm lucky.

If I remember correctly I think it is because of a law change that says that loyal customers should not pay more than new customers for the same insurance criteria which means that new customers are not subsidized by long standing customers.

I figured that meant "We'll put all the new customer prices up" not the other way round! :-D

I thought that at the time but I guess that the insurance companies thought they might be pushing their luck to do that. The last thing they need is an investigation into their sharp practices.

Last year my renewal quote came through at a total of £35.06. I normally pay around £200 so I very carefully checked the cover and all looked fine. Nothing had changed - not my occupation, nor that of the 2nd named driver, no claims, no change of address etc etc. It was on DD so I waited until the money went out, and yes, sure enough they took just £35.06. Got the certificate, policy wording and schedule, with correct expiry date. And I double-checked a couple of months later, still insured. Got my renewal quote through for this year, back up to £190-ish. I've absolutely no idea what happened or why, but I've not complained about it.

Works well for me. I only fill the tank in one(*) car every 4 or 5 weeks. (*) I have one car. My wife has two but she doesn't drive much. We have a 4th, the daughter's school car, which is an old beater we drive in the winter when the weather's bad.
