What kind of infrastructure is required for making an animation movie? Generally how long it takes to make it? Is it possible to make it in-house? What kind of softwares are needed? For sound effects and regular/special effects... Any relevant information would be appreciated. If you know which other sites I can go to, please let me know. Please advise. Thanks :) Pankaj Follow your goals, Means will follow you ---Gandhi---

First, what kind of animation you want to do ? 2d, 3d ? Second how commercial is that animation going to be ? animation movies are labor intensive, and depending on the scope of the movie, the software "category" is important. Third, if it's 2d animation, will you draw on paper then scan or will everything be paperless ? Fourth, if it's 3d, will you use motion capture to animate characters ? I will only write about 2d animation, which I know more than 3d) For professional 2d animation: USAnimation (ToonBoom Technologies), Animo(Cambridge), Retas!Pro (retas), Toonz, and another one that I always forget the name ) For semi-pro, small animations: ToonBoom Studio(ToonBoom Technologies, Crater(Crater) , moho (lost marbles), ... If you want to do paperless animation, have a look at ToonBoom Studio, or Opus (USAnimation v6), you need software that support pressure sensitive graphic tablets (wacom) Depending on what will be the final output (film print, AVI, quicktime, flash, ... ) some software will be better than others. I will lead you to www.toonboom.com,[^] which I think might offer a good range of products for you to look at.

Thanks a lot for quick responses and giving me some direction. I am thinking of a 3D animation movie which might include some music also. Do you have any suggestions for that category? Thanks Pankaj Follow your goals, Means will follow you ---Gandhi---

Maya is the application used by Weta Digital for "The Lord of the Rings" ie Gollum etc. I suggest you download the "learning edition" (http://www.aliaswavefront.com/freemaya[^]) and have a play before you get too carried away, 3d movies are not the easiest things to create especially if you are starting from scratch with no experience. The guys who made Shrek take two years per movie. Plus you need serious processing power (or patience) if you want to anything substantial Weta has over 2000 processors in its rendering farm (NZ Herald[^])

yes, Big studios buy softwares like Maya or 3DStudio, but most of the time, if not all of the time, will spend a large amount of time to customize the software by adding custom plugins, scripts and add-ons that will do tricks that the base software does not do. another choice for software, is the free Blender (http://www.blender3d.org).
