Windows 11 Explorer right click options menu - no short cuts

Summary: I cannot get shortcuts on the 'Show more options' menu on Windows Explorer to work. Lengthy explanation: In Windows 11, Windows Explorer you can select a file, and then right mouse click it to get a small list of options. If you want more options, you click the 'Show more options' and a list is shown. You cannot Alt-x options in that list and the 'x's are not even shown. However, if you use Shift-F10 instead of clicking 'Show more options' you get the list and the Alt-x options are shown. But I still cannot select the required option without having to use the cursor keys and pressing enter. If I press Alt then the menu is cleared even before I can type the 'x'. Question: How do I use shortcuts in the 'Show more options' menu? I want to do something like Shift-F10 Alt-B to action the option with the letter B underlined. Yes, I have Googled - all I get is ways to disable the menus and reload old / 3rd party versions. I want to be able to do it in a vanilla installation.
At the bottom of the context menu is (I think), More Options... Click that and you will see the old context menu of yore, or last week whichever the case may be.

I fixed this quite some time ago but don't recall exactly how. It could have been the registry tweak from this article: Disable "Show more options" context menu in Windows 11[^]

I don't know if this is new in 22H2, or I just hadn't noticed it before, but if you Shift + right-click, you get the traditional "more options" menu by default. For keyboard users, Shift+Context menu key also works, as does Shift+F10. Neither option seems to allow you to use the keyboard to invoke an item by its shortcut, however - pressing the Alt key with or without holding down the Shift key immediately dismisses the context menu. The only option seems to be to use the arrow keys to select the item, then press Enter to invoke the selected menu item. :doh: Edit: Turns out you don't need to press the
Altkey; just press the underlined accelerator key to invoke the menu item.

I think that that must be a 22H2 feature - I've not got that yet. I had tried using the underlined accelerator key to no availan item starting with W even . I have just retried and you can skip to standard Windows shortcuts (and some 3rd party ones) via the accelerator keys (e.g. I have 3 items with a shortcut of N, including in the middle of words) but you then have to press enter. However if there is only one option, pressing the key on its own seems (in some cases) to fire up the application instantly. I have found that for the specific instance that led to me raising this issue, W skips to an item that starts with a W even though its highlighted accelerator key is a B, but B does not work. I have not fully worked out the rules; suffice to say, it is different from Windows 3.1 through to Windows 10. P.S. How did you get the box shadowed key styles?

Shift + Right click has brought up extra options since at least Windows 7, probably much earlier. Including, weirdly enough, the option to copy the path to the file/folder you are selecting. I don't know why such a useful command is being hidden behind an extra key press that most people (from the looks of it, even on CP) are not even aware of :doh: I had an argument on CP about it more than a decade back and was told that it should be hidden behind the extra Shift key press, because it's a more 'advanced' command :doh:

My experience, Windows 11 Pro Highlight a file Hit shift F10 -> gives you the more menu Hit a shortcut key (eg 'm' to rename) -> acts exactly as you'd expect Take care Dave

There's a registry tweak to get rid of all that 'More options' silliness completely, if anyone's interested. Edit: I see Greg already said that :)

On Windows 10 I open the start menu, right-click on the Visual Studio icon and see my solutions to open. On Windows 11, they are gone. VERY annoying:thumbsdown::thumbs-down: I think that the Start menu needs some serious overhauling. :wtf:

Pardon my mirth, but I am tickled by the irony of an OS that built its success on the idea of the WIMP point-and-click paradigm having to offer keyboard commands and apparently struggling to get it right! PS I have nothing against WIMP and use both mouse clicks keyboard commands (where I can remember them or easily look them up from my cheat-sheet), but the irony is still amusing to me.

To get shortcut: Shift+F10 and then S No need for Alt, just the letter.

The keyboard shortcuts aren't meant to be used with the right-click popup menu. Using your examples... Select a JPG without right-clicking and press Alt+Enter. The Properties dialog will appear. Likewise, select a JPG and press Shift+F10, the more options context menu appears.

I just tried selecting a JPG file then using Alt+Enter, without touching the mouse, and it does open the properties. I also found Shift+F10 opens the full context menu, which has shortcuts indicated, such as the O of Open, but Alt+O does nothing! However, the sequence Shift+F10,O highlights the Open command, so once the file is selected, it can be opened, without using the mouse, by the sequence Shift+F10,O,Enter. I also tried Shift+F10,S,Enter which opens the Share dialog. All clear as mud! :confused:
