    Minecraft is great. written in Java (Well the main version is Java, but there are console versions, etc too). and technically, its old...and new.

      RetroGames.cz has a plethora of games that can be played online: MS-DOS, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Nin­ten­do En­ter­tain­ment Sys­tem (NES), Super Nin­ten­do (SNES), Ga­me Boy (GB), Game Gear (GG), Sega SG-1000, Sega Master Sys­tem (SMS), Sega Me­ga Drive (Genesis), and Nintendo 64.

            Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Defender, Doom (in order of complexity (and replayability). Introduce him to Doom and the fan produced Hires version - and shut him up until the new year ... :-D

                                    Also, if you do find some good ones... choose ones you can get the source code to. Playing is one thing. Seeing the juju that makes it work is a whole 'nother level.

                                      Tip: to play Railroad Tycoon online you have to press the num-lock key to lay track, don't build iron girder bridges as this will crash the game.

                                        You will probably need some C++ too to get games to run at an acceptable speed :-\
