What magic is in the NVidia 4 series cards?

My 250 watt 2080TI struggled to play Fallout 4 at the settings I wanted. It would so, but at 100% utilization and at 75 degrees celsius. My current 320 watt 4080 plays the game easily at settings I hadn't dared hope for before. All the way up. Also at a cool 50 degrees celsius. That is an amazing difference. The 2080TI was two generations old by the time I replaced it, but it ranked in with the generation 3xxx cards in performance. That the 4080 could blow it out of the water without even maxing out the GPU or getting above 50 degrees? AND churning out better frame rates and graphic detail? I don't know what they did in the Ada Lovelace architecture to make it perform like this, but more please. It's much better than the previous generation. Much better.

I have a friend who works for a company that develops games. They are always testing various models of video cards to benchmark their products. GPU technology is driven by games and other computational oriented industries. The GPU is learning the game as it is played and gets smarter at running them. His opinion. Sounds reasonable. I am not expert enough to doubt.

The big jump in technology happened between the 20 and 30 series, 40 is mind boggling. They also raised the base price a lot to chase the mining community... and got badly burned because most cr*ptocoins moved from proof of work (aka mining) to full Ponzi, pardon, proof of stake.

I'm no expert... What would happens if you put the 4080 fan and coolers on the 2080ti cards in regards of the temperature ?

I'm not expert either... You will increase power consumption without any gain in performance. And if your main concern is the temperature, you can replace the 2080's fans with water cooling.

Your card will run cooler, probably you could overclock it a bit more but not much. Cooling is only partially affected by coolers and fans, the disposition of the heat generating components is also important, plus their materials and heat tolerance.
