For me, it's delivery vans. Anyone gives me a delivery to do, and somebody always tries to give my vehicle a new paint job on the way. They seem to have a massive preference for red vehicles as well ... can't imagine why. :InnocentWhistleSmilie:

Are you sure you only drive delivery vans in video games? :~

Can we please make game NPCs more interesting? Also if you asked me in 1993 I'd have never thought the voice synthesis part (with speech patterns and such) would be the most challenging aspect of this given today's existing technology.

To err is human. Fortune favors the monsters.

They're more interesting and useful without. Aight, imagine WarCraft, the brotherhood near the deadmines. Would you prefer some pre-programmed hints and a clear storyline, or a whiny character that keeps generating new stories not relevant to the game or plot? ChatGPT is said to equal a nine-year old in testing, which makes me wonder which poor handicapped nine-year old is the norm. Imagine it grows enough next year to become a real nine-year old; would you want THAT to narrate Warcraft?? If ChatGPT has any place, then in politics. Mindless blabbering that is easily replaced by a political biased ChatGPT and a lot cheaper. That's the future of democracy; voting which ChatGTP is better. Because any "almost none-year old" in politics would be an improvement.

I dunno - if the NPC's could relate what happened in your specific game to their situation in a "believable" way then that could be a real game changer. Increase the immersion by making the actual script less scripted?

I lately read an article by someone who asked ChatGPT to be a DungeonMaster for a game... at the beginning it was no wanting to help, but the guy kept pushing and it eventually started to help with the game plot.

M.D.V. ;) If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about? Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.

Mayhaps in 20 years, once there is AI and knows what storytelling is. And yes, stories are a script; they also often contain a "moral", which is another thing "modern" AI doesn't have. MS took a previous AI chatbot offline after it spawned pro-Hitler quotes it been fed from the internet. That's what I see, and advanced chatbot; bot no AI in laymans terms. There's no intelligence involved, it is smoke and mirrors. You'd prolly be shocked, shocked I say, to hear it's about money. Now gimme my quantum computer that been promised for 20+ years :D AI is modeled after humans, right? So, do not expect intelligence any time soon. Expect an AI that wants to be adressed as "zir" to avoid gender confusion.

I would say take Fallout 4 for example. A named NPC like Desdomona would have pre-recorded dialogue, as she controls major story points and such. However, of the 20 settlers, all named "Settler" at Outpost Zimonja could be driven somewhat by a ChatGPT style systems. Sure as hell better than always hearing "Farming's as honest as honest work gets" and "Easy livin' this ain't" over and over again when you talk to them.

20 years? Hah! I'm, still waiting for my personal jetpack, flying car, domestic robot, and fusion reactor from the eighties!

So, I tried not to be too cynical, and you fill the gap right away. The average person now assumes computers can "think", because ChatGPT gives the illusion it does. What we really need is a good war to test this new technology.

I happen to like that game, and it serves just fine as an example, even if you don't enjoy it. A settler is just a generic "filler" NPC that occupies a settlement in-game. It doesn't really matter. The point is their dialog is fairly limited and very fixed. It shouldn't have to be.

Occasionally, I game. A current intrest of mine is MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. Someone took all the protagonist's voice lines and re-did them with AI based text-to-speech, so you can play as a female protagonist instead. The result is actually very impressive, and kinda sold me on AI based text-to-speech. If feel like this could open the door for generated content with full AI-generated voice acting. Since none of it needs to be done in real time, you could basically let GPT decide the mission parameters and backstory, with fully spoken dialogue, and maybe the occasional multi-mission sub-plot.
