It's controlled by idiots. I'm in a chat battle with a credit card company. I just want to close one of *4* cards I have with them. Their AI driven chat bot (their words not mine) is a mindless idiot. Please, God, do not offer control to nukes to this stuff. addendum: yeh me, I made it into Insider :)

I hate those automated assistants. They can only give info that's easily found on the website. The only reason I'm chatting is because the site can't do what I want. My last conversation went something like: "Hi, I'm the automated assistant. How can I help you?" "You can't. You've never been able to. You're a worthless POS that should be aborted." "I sense that you're a little frustrated. Would you like to talk to a real person?" "Yes. And I hope this session is recorded so the idiot that thinks you're a good idea can learn that you should be deleted. Permanently."

I phoned my local bank branch about this "credit card thing" when I wouldn't wait for the CC company. It got fixed. Letters saying it got fixed and sorry. (A $1.50 charge I didn't make; in another country). And all I did was ask about it. I gathered they were generally curious about how I thought to contact my bank branch instead of waiting "a minimum of one hour" on the credit company's phone. I guess people tend to not do what I did.

You're looking at this the wrong way. The question is not whether the AI is smart, the question is if it's smarter than a regular support person. I've contacted enough support to know the is probably the case X|

Depends on the company, I think. I use an email host for business email; I needed to find out the details for my MX records (domain hosted elsewhere). The chatbot looked at my query, instantly Noped right out of it and sent it to a human, who then emailed me the necessary information for MX and TXT domain records. I like that kind of chatbot.

"I just want to close one of *4* cards I have with them" may the force be with you i tried to close one of my cards that didn't have any changes on it for a period of 12 years, until i gave up. and this was with a human. i must say i tried peacefully to do it, over the counter. i would go there, ask them to erase my card out of existence. they would ask why, to which i always replied, i don't want to find out in the future that i owe you some money. they would say, but sir you account equals zero for X years, and i would say, i'm afraid that some day it would equal -zero, and then -0.000000001$ and then after 15 years it would equal X * -1463$ they always responded, ok we'll mark it for deletion if there is no usage of this account within next 3 months. after 3 years passed i went to check on the account and it was still active. i have repeated the procedure +2 times, without successes and then i gave up. “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” BF, 1759 - this should be written on every wall Those that put *class* in JavaScript are the same that put *var* in C#

I seriously need to work on my sarcastic writing skills, but all of you make good points. Banks do not like you to close accounts. The other day I was trying to cancel my OOMA VOIP account. It was actually functional but two things happened - the family really started using their cell phones for everything and the ooma device broke. Now when I purchased this, I set it up all online, created an account on line, registered a credit card online, etc. Contacted them online - "support" is available 24x7. But if you want to cancel, you have to call them for "account security." I'm tired of people making it hard to cancel, so I created a virtual CC number that expires next month and has a $5 spending limit. Good luck ooma :)

The chat bots seem to be universally dreadful in my experience. One of my providers has both a chat bot and a real chat. But they make it hard to actually get to the real chat. However, they did eventually give me a direct url to the real chat for future reference. I suggested they make it easier for actual paying customers, as opposed to inquirers, to get to a real chat. Even if they first direct you to an FAQ to cut down on trivial interactions. They probably haven't done that though.

I think that they would be more willing to close an account if they were told that you think that you have lost your card, or that it may have been stolen. Once reported to them, they might be liable to absorb the charges themselves. They don't like losing money.

Related story: A couple of weeks ago, I ordered an item from a major online merchant. When the delivery day came, two identical packages were left at my door. I checked just to make sure I hadn't accidentally doubled my order... nope, only one. The support link took me to the cheerful AI chatbot which got the numbers correct but interpreted my issue as having ordered two items and only receiving one. It was getting ready to send me yet another. :| Thankfully, there was eventually an option to speak with a genuinely intelligent being who understood the issue and assured me that I would not be charged for the second item. We have nothing to worry about - just don't put an AI in charge of anything!

You are a cruel man :). But I suppose this is true...

I think that they would be more willing to close an account if they were told that you think that you have lost your card, or that it may have been stolen. Once reported to them, they might be liable to absorb the charges themselves. They don't like losing money.

...they will issue you a new card then...

Pretty much exactly what I do every time. Same with Telephone IVR's, I just do everything I can to scramble/crash them, so they have no choice but to default to the "I'm broken, let's go to a human" behaviour. Seems though now, that many companies are onto people playing this game, so there is now yet another arms race evolving, where-by companies are actively pursuing solutions to prevent this "Abuse (as they see it)" happening.
