Just wanted to take this opportunity to say what a great job the moderators do. I do wander into S&A on occasion and am always impressed at how many spam incidents have been noted and taken care of. One very rarely sees any sign of spam in the main forums. Kudos to all!

The hamsters do a lot of it - there is a automated detector which feeds moderators a list of "possible spam / trolling" posts. We then decide and let it through or report the author in S&A for the ban hammer. Before the automated system was put in place a few years ago, it was a very different picture! But CP got hit by a massive spam wave - bots posting at a frantic pace - and the Hamsters decided that Something Must Be Done. And it works pretty well now it's trained up. The bots keep trying, but they don't get too far.

They presumably don't check if it works; if the messages get through - so probably they do it with a massive number of sites and get paid by the increase in traffic without anyone monitoring where that comes from. It doesn't cost them anything, and they might get lucky and get some through I guess.
