today I get a task to record attendees for our team meetings. almost 40 people potentially across different dept. WE use Microsoft team meetings to host our meetings. Do we have a quick way to count how many people attend this meeting?

    diligent hands rule....

Can you count how many didn't attend and subtract them?

Look at the thumbnails: count the columns, multiply by the rows. Or pretend you are a teacher, and take a roll call. :-D

The easiest way involves a little bit of work from your admin, but Teams has the ability to generate attendance reports[^].

it should say something like "xx people in the call" somewhere, where xx is a number of course.

Teams has the "people" list, that gives you the number of currently attending, when it comes to 100 or more it shows "99+" but if you hove the mouse it gives you the real number. And IIRC there is some stats available for the organisator to see max, average and a couple of things more... Sorry I can't give more details because I don't organise meetings for more than 10 people (but have attended a couple sessions where we were over 500, and another session even reached the 1k limit)

M.D.V. ;) If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about? Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.

my real challenge is to write these names down. I am afraid not taking note of these attendees on time in case they drop in the middle...

after meeting is over. Double click on the calendar meeting then click attendance. This is the people who actually opened the link. but it won't include the "extras" that are in a meeting room sharing a screen for the meeting.

To err is human to really elephant it up you need a computer

I question the process need for that. What is the point of knowing if 38 people versus 40 were there? If you are going to layoff those 40 people then you should be doing it individually. If you just want a sales ra-ra meeting then those who are not in sales could be more effective by doing their job (which also makes the company successful) versus going to a meeting. But if they want to go then let them.
