Well, I thought of ABNORMAL but couldn't get the reason. Quite embarrassing really since my first few years of employment were working on a merchant ship.

Usual being a synonym of normal and the no inverting the answer I thought would give the game away, I often get the solution and post it before breaking it down to justify it

However abnormal is not exactly the same as not-normal...

That's how I arrived at the solution. Usual = NORMAL, No = take the opposite => ABNORMAL. I wasn't sure about that result being a rating but went with it anyway. AB as a naval rating didn't occur to me, even though I have seen it before in the CCC.

rating usual = Abnormal I get. But then the "definition" would need to be just "no", and I don't think of "no" as being "abnormal". In this case the clue word "usual" is used twice - once as a synonym for part of the answer, and again as the answer's definition. That seems at odds with the customary rules for CCC, no? Wouldn't a "cleaner" clue be rating usual, rare? or similar?

Easier, yes - but the clue as presented is clever - the "No", negates the previous word to provide the definition, while the other two provide the "basics" for the clue. I like it (and not just because I got it )
