Michel Roux Jr announces closure of Le Gavroche[^] The restaurant that changed british cooking when it opened 56 years ago ... still fully booked, and still at it's peak; the "nicest" chef I've even seen on TV. A pity he can't hand it over to a new generation and let it move with a new head chef.

Maybe someone will come forward and take it over. Probably depends on whether M. Roux allows them to keep the name.

Disclaimer: Am not even remotely British. I'm a colonialist as some of you might call us. I have mixed feelings when things like this happen. It's bittersweet but there's also value in having partaken in something that is now unobtainable. I get like this about certain car lines being discontinued (I'm odd). Also there was a burger joint in my area that was wonderful. The menu covered all the walls, and you could get the strangest burgers and they were all delicious. The food was at the same time simple and yet could easily wax unusual if you strayed from the standard fare. Everyone in town loved it. Oh, and the ice cream bar. Amazing. It changed hands and it was never the same. Every time it changed hands since it has gone downhill a little more. Less menu. Less fun. No more train running around the ceiling on an elevated track. It's a shell of what it once was now. Nobody goes there. It's sad. I feel like it should have been leveled once Ernie retired. :(

Always sad to hear of businesses shuttering after being around for so long. See --> Carnegie Deli in NYC @ 7th avenue location closed after 80+ years in business. World famous, just like Le Gavroche.

At least you don't have to worry too much about the staff - after a spell at Le Gavroche they will be able walk into any kitchen and name their own terms.

Loved going here with my father and friends after school. I actually miss this place a lot. I see there is still a "Wienerschnitzel" but not the old "Der Wienerschnitzel". Hmm, interesting. Menu is way different now.

They removed the "Der" from the name in 1978 but the restaurant still exists to this day as just "Wienerschnitzel". I used to go to this place for their double-bacon cheeseburger with guacamole. It was amazing!! There menu online is very different now then it was in the late 1980's.
