With the exception of my rats nest of cables: I need to set aside a day to sort them all out. New graphics card arrives: get it in, and turn it all on. Ticking noise from computer - hurriedly turn it off - cable hitting a fan. Sorted, turn on again. Windows appears, in "oh gawd that's lo-res" mode, and only one monitor. Device manager confirms "Basic graphics card" detecte - guess that it's drivers, and start trying to download them from the MSI site. Just about worked out where to look and silently, Windows puts my resolution rate, wakes up the other two monitors, and returns to normal - something's installed the right drivers in the background. And it works: GTA V in 1920x1080, GPU core temperature cooler than I like my coffee, and silent as the grave - only the CPU fan is revolving, and that slowly. CPU Temps in the low 40's and everything smooth as butter. Nice.

I got a 3080 a while back and it did the same thing. Guess the hamsters ran around looking for a new nest and when they found it everything was right in hamsterland?

By default, I assume that posts in web forums as written by Americans. That can make me jump high, in cases when the assumption is wrong.

Does that apply to driving distances and speed as well? Be honest... Most Brits I know use metric for temperature, smallish measurements (mm, m, l, etc...) but revert to imperial for driving - miles and mph. They also tend to revert to the middle ages for body weight (stone).

We don't really get a choice in that one: all the limits and road signs are in mph / miles (and yards for exit slip road distance signs) and while I can convert them in my head it's hassle that doesn't help anyone! I use grams / kilos, but I have to label freezer food in pounds and ounces for Herself. Dij the cat works in mice per furlong, I think.

We don't really get a choice in that one: all the limits and road signs are in mph / miles (and yards for exit slip road distance signs) and while I can convert them in my head it's hassle that doesn't help anyone! I was thinking you would say something like: Speed limits are posted in km/hr, but I have my speedometer set in mile/hr. No officer, I could not be speeding… I had my cruise control set on the speed limit.

My wife uses Google maps on her phone for satnav directions. It not infrequently says things like "Turn left in half a mile" then a bit further on "Turn left in 200 metres". It just randomly switches between imperial and metric the whole time. Now I don't really care which it uses, but when it constantly flips from one to the other it does distract me. Anyone else have that issue?

My father was a master carpenter back in the old days when metric was first coming in. He used to have fun by ordering wood to be cut to length... "3ft 4cm, please" - and admired the guy who didn't blink an eye but measured and cut precisely to that length!

I am not sure when Norway abandoned Imperial units - it must be close to 100 years ago. Still noone will blink if your refer to two-by-four or two-by-six. I was surprised to see a carpenter's folding rule that did not have cm on one side, inches on the other; they always had, at least a few years ago, and everybody refers to them as "tommestokk" - "inch rod". For bikes, the wheels are still described by their diameter in inches. Kicksled ("spark") size is given in feet (the length of the rails). We have forgotten the proper use of "
