ARISE, YOUTH. I'm still not convinced, and I'm looking for a better pair. This does give me all the vowels (plus Y) and RSTH, which are pretty common consonants. Spouse-type person uses HAIRY MOUSE.

My method was to download the Wordle word list - it starts with all the answers in order of appearance followed by all other 5-letter words. Then use a spreadsheet to find the letter frequency in each answer position. Then choose a word that uses the most frequent letter for each position, but avoiding words with repeated letters.

I vary most days, but often use
train,steak,stair,adieuand some of the other commonly listed ones. However I will sometimes just use whatever comes into my head (unless it uses fewer than 5 different letters) and that method has resulted in at least 3 1st-guess wins. Sadly they don't show in my history; I never used to bother with logging in, and every time Windows decided to upgrade itself (even though I've used every known method to stop it doing so) it would wipe my cookies and therefore my Wordle stats (as well as forcing me to log back into virtually every site). Now I have a free account at NYTimes so I just log back in and the stats are retained.Telegraph marker posts ... nothing to do with IT Phasmid email discussion group ... also nothing to do with IT Beekeeping and honey site ... still nothing to do with IT

Mine are based on the English letter frequencies - ETAION SHRDLU - which are also the first 2 columns on the keyboard of a Linotype typesetting machine [^]. My dad used to be a printer! So on Wordle, I use ATONE, then, if nothing came up, I'd likely use SHIRK; if there was an E, I might use SHIRE or, for an A, SHARD and so on. A few days ago, I got nothing from ATONE and just the K from SHIRK, so was looking for a word with D, L and/or U and got it on the 3rd row with...? :) I also play Quordle where my first 3 rows are almost always SLATE, POUND and BRICK, which uses up over half the alphabet.

I use Stare Bling Ducky Whomp This selects 20 different letters leaving only 6 less frequent letters, possibly 5 as Q can be eliminated if U is not used. I had a 99% success rate for many months due to one miss on a set of letters that could have been three or four words.
