all I want to do is back up - as in uninstall - a limited number of products I have on a VM. I need a clean, virtuous Windows 10. I think it got laid by MS with a leaky protection device. It turns out that you have to uninstall applications in order (no order suggested by MS) or you just are unable. Fool me once, shame one you.... With the increasing power pcs and laptops (redundant) represent, we need to completely move to virtual machines. I've been in the business for 40+ years, and MS has just gone down the crapper. They assume virgin machines. Then come the updates. Just do it. Microsoft does it to you.

Can always create granular snapshots, one for each app you've installed, using a shared resource for data that won't be affected. Granted, the caveat being that it'll have to be done sequentially so random uninstalls can't happen. But, by the sound of a clean, virtuous Win10, you should at least have one snapshot created right after a fresh install on a VM - always.

That's why I start installing TOTALLY offline. Windows XXX --> Image v1 Stand Image v1 + Offline Drivers --> Image v2 Stand Image v2 + Internet = Update --> Image v3 Stand Image v3 + Office + Updates --> Image v4 Stand Image v4 + Software that won't change much --> Image v5 Stand Image v5 + Browsers + Printer + Scanner + ... --> Image v6 Stand Image v6 + Rest of Software that will be used --> Image v7 around 6 months later... Restore Image v7 --> Did anything change? Install and (maybe) a v8 usually not around 6 months later --> rinse and repeat New Major Version that better "clean" install... Rant about Microsoft A LOT + Start over again

Would it not be easier to just make a new VM?

My habit is to make a snapshot immediately after installing the OS. Periodically I update it with OS updates. In most cases, that takes care of "works on my machine"[^] situations.
