I tell you what, I love SnagIt because its editor gets it right when it comes to annotating a screenshot after capture. Plus, for me, I can drag and drop out of the preview window into an email without saving the picture for those quick notes. Saves me clutter in my saved folders. The video capture is pretty nice as well. As for free software, a lot of other users where I work have/had PrintKey 2000[^] installed. Not sure how up to date it is.

Wow. I just read through this thread. I didn’t know there were so many ways to do that. I’ve just been using my phone to take a picture. :)

Greenshot is the best IMO. And it's free. Greenshot for Windows Very versatile so you can configure it to suit your workflow and preferences.

Greenshot is good but lately I've just been using the built in screenshot capabilities of Windows 10 or 11. For creating animated GIFs I use ScreenToGif.

Using ALT makes it just capture only the current window rather than the entire screen.

Windows+Shift+S for their Windows 11 snipping tool, which lets you control what you want to get.

What if you want the whole window? :) Seriously though, that's actually cool to know. Windows has enough built-in options. I wouldn't install another tool for this.

What happens is Windows+Shift+S pops a bar from the top center of the monitor. There are 4 options (modes) on it: rectangle, freeform/lasso (just draw with mouse and get what you enclose), window, and full screen. Just click what you need. If one of the first 3 options, then you use the mouse to determine what you get. For window mode, just click into a window to get all of that window. Unfortunately, you can't take a screenshot of the snipping tool's bar as it disappears when you start use any of the modes.

For years, I am using simply the good old (Shift)PrintScreen function that exists since the days of DOS and the crop the image if needed in IrfanView. Never bothered with any special "screenshot software"...

I had to disable the Windows snipping tool shortcut after a certain Windows update (MS made it the default for print screen), but other than that it's been fine for me.
