Hi all how do you name your servers at work? some use characters from books (lord of the rings for example) what do you use? bryce --- Publitor, making Pubmed easy. http://www.sohocode.com/publitor
One way I enjoy (since I've only worked with tiny networks) is to use fictional characters - like the 7 dwarves, Chip & Dale, etc. My home server is my favorite, though - Mastercylinder. If I could repackage it in a cylinder shape, I probably would.

Unfortunately yes...and yeah, I do actually go to church(otherwise that passage probably wouldn't have sprung to mind). I really should go pray now...I sure hope this house has a good lightning rod system. :~

Because I know people that would love to attempt to hack into my system (so far 2 failures and a failed Denial of Service attempt) I use cryptic names. My current server may or may not be named comp-aaycky5r1p or something similar. And the workgroup my server belongs to is a word converted to binary, but I can't remember what the word is. I used to use elements of the periodic table of elements such as the noble gases, especially the deadly ones. However I do use friendly names in my hosts file so that I don't have to remember IPs. Where I used to work, until recently; they were named using the department and then a number. the Strip Department had Strip1 to Strip5 and the Metallurgy Lab had MetLab1 to MetLab3. Of course, we installed Sapphire from LabVantage (LIMs system) and the server was MetLabLIMS ...

I've only named 2 computers (Red-Rocket and Pyro) but some of the computer names at work are dev1, lucy, wal (for William A. Lindgren), cadkey, and gatekeeper (the firewall). On campus they name the servers stuff like rocket, saucer, and comet and the labs that have multiple computers are named stuff like gpunix#, dell#, and blade#, replacing # with a number. Why not just have it sticking out the "top" like a top loading toaster? You could even get something like one of those laptop CD drives that has the thingy in the middle that latches onto the CDs.

The only problem is my computer sits underneath my desk, and there's not a lot of room under there. I don't think I'd be able to fit a CD height on top of the computer...

In various places at various times i have used/seen : Fish e.g. trout, bass, ... Cheese e.g. cheddar, gouda, ... Mythology e.g. loki, thor, ... Birds e.g. falcon, osprey, ... Rocks/Minerals e.g. coal, feldspar, ... Stars, constellations, ... ... among others Lately, at home, i've been using characters from North American mythology[^]. ...cmk Save the whales - collect the whole set
