We once named our servers planet names (with the dev server being named Sun as everything revolves around it  ). Then each department was a continent, with each pc in that department taking a name from that continent :)

I'm a geek, but everytime I repave my laptop I use a different Star Trek ship name...right now I'm on Valiant (a Defiant class vessel, named so after the USS Defiant). The IT guys were baffled one day when the found Defiant in Network Neighborhood. :-D

Funny, Star Trek ships for me too.... My Laptop is now Voyager (seemed appropriate)

PC's here are named after the people that use it. Some weren't renamed when they moved to a new position, so The file server now has the name of the boss. Actually, it's more complicated. My predecessor moved my bosses old PC to be Internet proxy and file server without renaming it. Now, when I decided that maybe separating proxy and file server is a good idea, especially when the file server is slower than a 10MBit Coax ring, everybody was used to the name of the file server. WHo am I to change them? If it were up to me, they'd get Shakespeareian names.

The reverse is even scarier: The bible could be some kind of Star Wars thing.

I once worked for a company that used the names from the old Scandinavian religion. The developer server was called Bifrost, which was a rainbow that served as a bridge from the world of the humans to Midgard which was where the Gods and the Trolls lived. Luke 2:9 - 12 (Slightly ammended) And a Sales Rep from Microsoft suddenly stood before them, and the glory of Bill shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the rep said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the students; for today in the classroom of Ryan there has been born for you a Savior, which is a Windows Server. "This will be a sign for you: you will find a server encased in aluminum and sitting in a rack." I need to go pray for forgiveness now...:-O

I've had a couple of naming conventions - currently it's based around the XBox game Halo. My desktop is "cortana" and my server is "guiltyspark" :-D. -- Ian Darling
