Is anyone else giving up on social media. Twitter permanently banned me for being politely left wing, and Facebook has me on constant bans because they push things I don't agree with onto my feed and I try to politely discuss them from time to time. Add a constantly flow of fake accounts trying to romance scam me, and I'm pretty much done

The only constant "social" media for me is the lounge. Facebook droped around 15 years ago, got into it again 10 years ago to find some lost people and try to get in contact with them and droped it again some months later. Last 10 years only there for 8 to 10 times in total because I searched for something concrete that was not offered in other places. LinkedIn no account ever. Twitter no account ever. all other staff... no account. Might have had one in a couple of places (i.e. XING), but got deleted due innactivity.

M.D.V. ;) If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about? Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.

I've only ever used FB but I have a very small friends list (less than 50) which consists solely of family and people I am in-person friends with. Everything I do and post is "private to friends only". We use it strictly to keep in touch with each other and share what's going on. We keep it rather civilized and avoid the subjects that we know, from our personal contact, tend to annoy each other. That served me well for many years, but the past 6 months or so ... FB is getting way too aggressive in the ads they keep throwing in my feed. The content itself isn't bad, and I see why they think I might like this s*$t, given my activity but ... enough already. I can always tell when my "don't show me this crap" response to every ad starts to wear off every month or so. 3 weeks of a reasonable feed and then a week of having to block all the crap. Unfortunately, this is the simplest way to keep in touch with the folks who have moved away.

I quit Twitter when it became X. But I keep Facebook. It helps me normalize my strange hobbies. I can show my wife a photo of somebody with a closet full of (24) unicycles and explain that only having 5 isn't a big deal. Same thing with my canoe/kayak addition. I also use it to connect to community events to get in and out. As a general rule, I block any group that was shared in a post. This keeps my feed clean(er). I really only want original content from my friends and family.

Yes, but I'm very proactive in regards of who I follow and I use the block feature a lot. I will often start following someone for a few weeks/months and then just block them after a while. I'm very much left leaning, never had an issue with twitter; maybe I'm just not an activist. I'm still on twitter. I don't follow a lot of political things, so I don't get the crazy stuff. It's still a good tool for keeping track of the general news instead of needed to browse a dozen of different news sites. I'm using Facebook a lot less than before, seems my feed is mostly advertisement these days or unrelated accounts and only a handful of people in my (real life) friend list is active. Same for Instagram, I only follow a few people with similar interests (food and travel) and maybe 4, 5 local celebrities. Reddit is probably the only "social media" I use frequently (mostly for food and travel and other hobbies).

For me this Lounge is the only social media I post to. I have a FB account but have never posted to it. I only use it to look up other people - and that less than once per year. I only went to LinkedIn to connect with old colleagues - and the only one I kept in touch with has since died (COVID) so I'll drop off that soon.

                    - I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.

LinkedIn is good, as far as I am concerned. In a moment of madness a few weeks ago I joined Facebook, and I am getting forty or fifty aggravating emails/notifications a day. :( I am quitting today.

Sorry to hear that. I'm not really one to speak about relationships (I'm very much single and that's what floats my boat), but based on what I keep reading, social media is NOT a viable alternative for "real" human contact - people are now said to have more "friends" than ever, but feel the loneliest they've ever felt. That's the irony. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing social about social media. Those are not your friends. I suppose all I'm saying is don't stay on social media for the sake of countering any feeling of loneliness. Seek out real people for that. :rose:

I gave up a few years ago. I have a FB account that I check a few times a year...never had a Twatter account and have no interest in it...don't do linkedin either. CP is my social media! :)

When I turned 50 FB decided I am a pervert and started sending me ads to make it with 20 year old girls. I shared a picture of people dressed in pumpkins and got a ban for nudity but I get ads for insane s3x toys. My wife threw me out 3 years ago and I held it together on the basis I visit every few weeks. I use FB to talk to her and used it this morning to apply to join a band. I stopped using FB seriously 10 years ago when they allowed a far right wing gang to stalk and threaten my kids. I just kind of prod at it now

Wow, you must keep it to yourself. I was banned for being left wing BEFORE Elon took over, then again after.

They banned me in a day LOL. So I never went back.

LinkedIn is good, as far as I am concerned. In a moment of madness a few weeks ago I joined Facebook, and I am getting forty or fifty aggravating emails/notifications a day. :( I am quitting today.

Not yet, but I'm about to. Pr0n sites are far more entertaining anyway, and occasionally educational. ;)

Find that hard to believe man. It's more open now than it used to be.

FB on a downward spiral. They ban everyone for sneezing.

No, it's more right leaning. It allows more violent hate speech. I got banned for politely telling hate pages the truth about trans kids (for example that they can't access surgery). I didn't argue. I simply corrected hate, There's TONS of Nazis, I ran into open Nazis all the time. That's who it's more open to

Basically. I've had bans for saying men are silly. I got a ban for saying rape is bad. Hate speech against straight white men seems to be what they aggressively target the most. I reported someone openly saying they want to kill all gays and FB said that was allowed

The world is just less safe. I get scam calls all the time. I lecture my old dad all the time on ways to stay safe

Thanks. It just occurred to me there's a place I can chat to people and not get banned :)
