First you should know that I'm a relative newcomer here. I registered a long time ago, don't even remember why, probably to ask a question, but then life happened and I had other things to do. I became more active only in the last 3 or 4 years and now I got hooked and hang around here, probably more than I should do. I've come to realize that this is a nice, decent and caring community and that begs the question: how is this possible? I a world full of trolling, hate and blustering, what is the magic sauce that allowed this oasis of respect and gentleness? Maybe the ones that have been here longer might have a clue. Maybe it's possible to spread that fairy dust in other places? Who knows?

Adding to Gary's answer: eliminating the Soapbox. Many liked the feature, but it definitely brought out the worst in some people. Chris unequivocally said "No" when that was closed. My hat is off to him for that decision.

Thank you! So far I’ve got two ingredients: enlightened moderation and the elimination of this “soapbox”. As I’ve said, I haven’t been around long enough to see how toxic this forum was. Is it still archived somewhere? I’d like to see it as a museum piece. Mircea

Worse, a lot of instructions begin with "why don't you...?" E.g. Why don't you take out the trash while I do the dishes? -- Because I don't feel like it is why not.

Answers to the "why don't you...?" question are rarely welcome.
"They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers! Can I get an amen?"
So I've found.

It's not archived here. Maybe archive.org, but I doubt it.

Are you on a different CP? :~ I've been called stupid, a moron, a child killer... By active and "respected" members of the community no less. Luckily they've all been banned. The closing of the soapbox helped too. So maybe that's why it's so peaceful now. No politics or religion and rude members get a ban.

As I’ve said, I started hanging around rather recently so I haven’t seen all that venom. A few others have suggested that closing the soapbox was a good thing.

In the 90's I used to belong to a service called BIX. It was Byte Magazine's online forums and attracted a lot of notable people in the computer and other industries. There was a lot of history going on. I remember a particular disccusion on discovering the then undocumented inner workings of MS-DOS to create robust Terminate and Stay Resident programs. It eventually was sold to the Delphi service and after a few years shut down as the Internet had a lot of free sites to offer with more friendly user interfaces. Code Project has a lot of the feeling for me.

Thanks again Richard! What I see in this discussion, are some polite adults having a difference of opinion and trying to find common ground. A place where all agree would be incredibly boring, but keeping disagreements within the bounds of civility, that is the true magic. Mircea
And that is the very thing that makes a place like this actually usable. Too often people want to hide behind anonymity while slinging personal insults towards people that they don't know. I don't ever find that here. I would absolutely attribute it to soft but firm guidance from the moderator(s). I absolutely love getting my daily emails and clicking on articles that I find interesting. And to whoever creates the story sub-headers in the emails, you are freaking AWESOME! :-D

Good moderation makes or breaks a community. There have been some trolls here and there - i got trolled last week here, but the staff tends to keep it to a minimum.

It didn't get closed, it got nuked.

I agree. It didn't add much of anything to the community except drama. People took it as an excuse to be their worst selves, and it didn't really match the overall theme here.
