Satelite TV Image Quality
-
The image quality on my brother-in-law's DISH Network setup ranges from bad to putrid. The artifacting can get really bad. Before dropping it to save money, I had digital cable and don't recall the quality being so poor. Has anyone done a side-by-side comparison of DISH Network, DirectTV and [Digital] Cable? I'm mainly curious if DirectTV quality is as bad as DISH? (If you look at the programming guide, the reason for the DISH problems become very apparent; they are packing a huge number of channels into their bandwidth and adding more all the time.)

I had DirecTV, and the digital quality was pretty good with one exception. Too many trees where I was. I got alot of artifacting, mainly on certain channels. It was too much trouble to deal with, so I went to digital cable cuz they had a good deal that gave me their entire line up, along with cable modem, for less than I was paying for 4 satellite channels, basic cable, and cable modem. My complaint now, is that the bandwidth requirements and demand have exceeded my cable company's pipe size. Strangely enough, it only affects image quality on movies (random pixelation here and there, and occasional sound/picture synch problems, but much less than satellite). Cable modem throughput is unaffected. I like my digital cable. I just wish our cable installers knew what they were doing, when they drop and add lines, bury cables, and whatnot. (Nother story, partially my own fault for chopping up the cable line digging a flower bed, but it shouldn't take 3 trips, and their own crew chopping a line again, to fix it!) I have DirectTV and it looks crystal clear. Sound is also DVD quality. If we get a gully washing rain, then it may go out for a minute or so but that usually only happens 3 or 4 times a year. I actually have the DirectTV with TiVo built in. You can record two channels at once and be watching a recorded show at the same time. It is a nice setup. Todd

DIrectTV works great for me. The only trouble I've had is some very minor distortions on the hottest of days. You might try re-aligning your dish - it's possible that some vibration has knocked it a little bit off center, reducing the signal level.
