It's funny how you become dependent on a technology. Our home network has up and down, mostly down for the last 2 days. The provider sent us a new modem but it's not going to be here until mid-week. We both feel lost and not able to do our regular routine.

Many apologies. I didn't realize at the time that my post would amount to trolling the forum. I retract my statement and beg your pardon.

One threat to our network communications is any 10 cent crew with a back hoe. Next threat - management allowing projects to use libraries and OS builds off the internet (remember the great doorbell DNS attack?). I could go on. The real threat is the simple lack of commonsense.

IMHO, the elder generation is less dependent on technology than the younger one, those born after 2000. Most of us, elders, got introduced to technology at some stage in our life (before which there was just paper, pen, slate, chalk, books, etc.), whereas they are 'born' in technology.

I'm definitely older generation - started programming 50 years ago - and definitely miss it when our home network connection is down... I have 14 active Echo devices in the house plus 15 smart switches (mostly controlling lights). I can't remember the last time I listened to radio or music on a proper radio or stereo system, and it was really annoying a couple of months ago to have to actually switch lights off before going to bed, instead of just saying "Alexa, turn the downstairs lights off" as I walk upstairs!

I agree with the dependency issues. My family's and my life would be very different without internet, to say nothing of the withdrawal symptoms my teenage daughter would undergo. :) Our internet provider is very reliable, but given the level of potential histrionics, I have both a spare modem and a cell data plan (cell data plans are quite cheap in Israel). I hope that both go unused.

I used to have that problem regularly, Mike. My provider always told me it was my modem. After 4 modems and about $300 in service calls, I got a different provider - no more troubles.

I left the local herd entirely a couple years ago and went with Starlink. I'm not looking back!

                                        Will Rogers never met me.

I meant, you found it a chore to manually turn your lights off that is sad IMHO

As I get older, I find it painful to deal with stairs. If I'm more than halfway up or down the first flight of stairs, any lights I left on are just going to stay on until the next time I'm up or down there again. I will not be making a special trip just to turn off a light that might cost me all of 2 cents in the meantime. I've been thinking about upgrading to Alexa-enabled switches and outlets, but so far laziness and cheapness are winning.
