Hi All, I have a question, as I have used Notepad++ for years. I was told it would be on my current employers list of approved software. Probe further to find out why, turns out its 'Freeware' and as such is insecure. Is this alarmist I haven't heard of any issues, the only thing is our PC are so nailed shut you have to get IT every time it updates...:~ Glenn

So we pay for LastPass, Git, and the list goes on, and we keep reading about how they get hacked. Seems like your IT has it bassackwards.

Like you, I've used Notepad++ for years. While I'm sure it has its bugs, I haven't heard of any security breach that was traced to it. I would expect that if one avoids plug-ins from unknown third parties, one should be quite safe. Good luck convincing IT of this. :~

Just tell IT to make a monthly donation and it will no longer be free: Donate | Notepad++[^] :D Is VS Code insecure as well? Could be a good alternative.

Notepad++ is NOT freeware; it is open-source. Your IT people can download the source code[^] and inspect it for any security issues it may have. They are also welcome to fix those. There is a dramatic difference between "freeware" and "open source". Not knowing that, shows some limitations in one's level of expertise (to put it mildly).

Your IT must be like ours, they know that writing software is easy. They tell us devs all the time and ask us things like, "Nuget access is dangerous. Why do you need access to nuget? Just write the code in those libraries yourself."

Just for reference, I don't agree with blocking apps like Notepad++. But, if I had to hazard a guess as to why this is, remember a company cares about support more than the product itself. If an enterprise relies on a piece of software that's dead in the water and they can't find support for it, it can be a problem. Money isn't always the first consideration for companies. Notepad++ just probably got caught in the wake. I mean git and VS Code are free. I bet they allow those right? There are alternatives to Notepad++ that do really well. UltraEdit is still around and it's still pretty awesome. Higher learning curve, but if support is the main concern then it's hard to go wrong with that. Also, you could meet in the middle and get Sublime Text. That's what I use instead of Notepad++ because personally, I find it silly that as programmers we expect to get paid for software but refuse to pay others for the software they create.

No, it does neither of those things. Visual Studio is an Interactive Development Environment, and as such just manages your projects. All code generation, whether machine or MSIL, is done by the compilers. And straight C/C++ code does not generate MSIL.

Notepad++ was effectively obsoleted by VS Code anyway.

I don't think it's acceptable to lock developer PCs down. It's arguably more important than doing it for everyone else since many developers will probably have more access to more things. I can get that. It's just that it just doesn't work and can't really. It could be good if you want a place to put your feet up, instead of "it's compiling" being the mantra for screwing around, it just becomes "waiting on security hand holding". Typical corporo-idiocy. I'd imagine you can get someone who knows something about anything to "unban" notepad++. Alternatively, anon email them a link to your glassdoor review where you outline their draconian lunacy of disallowing notepad++ installations.

For medical application software, there is [SOUP](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software\_of\_unknown\_pedigree) The IT department will then be more concerned about the development process of that software, than other aspects.
