In Ten Minutes...

...I'm going to unplug my computer, put in the new 120GB HDD I bought 3 weeks ago. Then I'm going to blow away Windows 2000 Professional and install Windows XP Professional. After that is up and running I will follow up with Red Hat 9 and FreeBSD 5.1 in that order. If anyone knows that this is the wrong order or has any other knowledge to pass on you better be quick. Too late, I waited 14 minutes with no answer. One operating system transplant coming up. Oh, damn... I was going to warn you off WinXP - you'll hate it - but I'm too late. Bummer. Just as a precaution, re-install a copy of Win2K somewhere so you'll have something functional to work with later.

Well, this is too late I guess. Just one warning: Install the WinXp first and RedHat last. WinXp messes up with the master boot sector, so it is better to install it first. The Grub Loader of Redhat it really nice and can find any operating systems. Thus if you install it the last, the Grub Boot Loader will allow you to boot all of those operating systems without any painful setup process... Mustafa Demirhan http://www.macroangel.com

Lazarus LongControl Panel, Display, Appearance tab, select Windows Classic style from the Windows and Buttons drop-down. Right-click your taskbar, select Properties. On the Start Menu tab, select Classic Start menu. VoilĂ , Windows XP looks like Windows 2000. There's also a way to get the old Shutdown box (the one with the drop-down list of options rather than the three coloured buttons) but I can't remember how to do it right now. -- Mike Dimmick

I recommend that you ghost win2k onto the new drive, and then proceed with the linux stuff. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

I have to admit that it boots up a lot faster than any other version of Windows, but there all speed improvements end. It also is frustrating to work with, as it loses network connections constantly, and the wireless drivers built in don't work with any wireless equipment I've tried. Apps crash every few minutes, resulting in polite little dialogs that offer to report the problem to Microsoft. We hates it.....

Lazarus LongHave you booted windows 3.1 lately? It is considerably slower than Win 3.1 or Win 95 when it comes to booting. But as for stability I have never worked with a more stable operating system. If a lot of things are crashing this is a sign of a harware problem, faulty drivers or poorly written software. John

I have spent too much time lately in front of client machines running it and poking around looking for where all the settings hide. The bloke who owns the company where I worked my second job is buying a couple of VMWare licenses soon. I should be able to run Win2K under Red Hat 9 then. John Simmons / outlaw programmer wrote: I recommend that you ghost win2k onto the new drive, and then proceed with the linux stuff. My Win2K installation had become so filled with shit that it was time to reinstalled anyway. Only way to clear out the crap successfully. I decided to go with XP as a lot of client sites I visit run it and I spend ages trying to figure out where everything hides. I haven't had a programming job since November 2001 and after 13 months out of work got a non-techical job which sucks. 2 weeks later I got an after hours job basically doing sys admin and trouble shooting mostly onsite. Not great but better than the government paper shuffling shit I have during the day. As bad as XP is it's better than 95/98/Me/NT which is what all clients bar one have if they don't have XP already.
