Japan declares victory in 'war' on floppy disks[^] I had no idea anyone was still using them (or that any still worked!) let alone that a government agency would require submissions on them. I haven't even had a floppy disk drive in any computer this century, and use the A: drive for network storage.

Still used, especially in military and industrial production. I had to interface with a 1978 system... in 2017.

That'll be fun ... the last manufacturer of floppies (Sony) stopped production back in 2011 ... :-D And the ones I bought when I still used them definitely had a "shelf life" before they degraded beyond the point of readability!

Some small manifacturer still exists, plus Verbatim still makes them. Not a sustainable solution long term but you know how pachyderms move... slow and ponderously until sh** hit the fan then it's a mad rush trampling everything in their path.

I remember reading years ago that Japan was still very much committed to floppy disks, but were trying to move away from them. That, and fax machines. Moving data, 1.44MB at a time...can you imagine this in 2024?

When the last company I worked for shut down (and hardware was going to get thrown out), I was given the opportunity to salvage whatever I wanted. One of our salesguys, in the laptop bag he left, had an external floppy drive, interfacing through USB. It's the only floppy drive I still have to this day. I have used it, and it still worked when I last tried.

On the positive side, it ensures that all submissions must fit in 1.44MB.

Some people would be in trouble. People have been taking for granted resources (storage, bandwidth, access speed, etc) are unlimited and you end up with the situation we have right now.

                      Tora! Tora! Tora!

The difficult we do right away... ...the impossible takes slightly longer.
