Just a few months ago, you could easily go to your boss and say, "Oh, StackOverflow is down so I can't move forward on my project." However, that excuse is no longer valid. Here's the new meme, I just minted[^] to explain it. :-D The Dev game has changed to a whole new level.

How junior does one have to be for those sorts of excuses to remain acceptable? Not aimed at you specifically; I'm familiar enough with your contributions to CP to know you deserve all the kudos you can get. I'm thinking specifically of those who aren't old enough to have ever coded without the ability to google everything.

Exactly! I've actually taken 20 minutes (or longer) to write up a question on electronics.stackexchange (one of the most arrogant forums of stackexchange) only to have the entire post deleted where I couldn't even find the post again. I've found Copilot to be very nice, even when I ask stupid questions.

...and I've found I stop being nice to Copilot when it starts giving stupid answers. That generally happens when I reply along the lines of "this won't work, because of A, B, C", and it responds with "try this instead" and then proceeds to repeat the exact same thing that lead me to my initial response. And then it fails to acknowledge even that, and that's as far as it'll go.

Yeah, very true. AI seems to get an idea in it's "head" and can't get it out.

I kinda have to agree here. If you were hired, and can get fired, you're working for whoever signs your paycheck, not with.

So, AI is actually StackOverflow backup device. Good to know. Additionally, AI will never close or downvote your question, or mark it as duplicate.

Succinctly put. I switched for working "for" someone to "with" someone when I went freelance. I felt far more in partnership with my clients, and more invested in their businesses, than I ever did as an employee. I got the feeling though that my approach was not what most were used to when working with freelancers... Also at no point in my career would I ever have even hinted that I'd used SO or any online equivalent. If I didn't know how to do something (which happened quite often) I'd acknowledge it, then use the manuals to find the answer. (And if it was something that my client could reasonably have expected me to know, I wouldn't charge for that time, either. Employers expect to pay for training, clients don't.)

Telegraph marker posts ... nothing to do with IT Phasmid email discussion group ... also nothing to do with IT Beekeeping and honey site ... still nothing to do with IT

Pretty much mirrors my approach Derek - I was only ever directly employed by a software house once - I lasted a month and hated it - the rest of my time I was freelance using my limited company as a a payment vehicle.

It was a bad joke. The idea was that if you've been working "with" people rather than "for" people for 40 years is that, all along, your employer must've been mom and dad.
