Despite being the all knowing Microsoft Guru that I am , I have a question. I was trying to delete a movie file that I have sinced burned to CD, upon trying to delete it, I get the "This file is being used by another process/user". I have no movie players open and I went to task manager and I can't see any process that would be using the movie file. So is there any way to identify current processes using a file? Thank you to the Collective

Try Process Explorer[^]. It shows all open handles, including files. It also does a lot more, including showing loaded dlls, etc. An invaluable tool. :)

I have gotten this error when trying to delete (or move) a video file that was shown in the Windows XP preview window off to the left of the file window. Kinda' sucks but it seems that WinXP doe snot always want to let go of a file.

Try selecting the file, waiting for a couple of seconds and then hitting delete. When you select a file or even hover over it, explorer opens the file to read certain info from it.

Searching the web without Google is like straining sewage with your teeth.

I just close the Explorer window, go do other stuff for a bit, and then delete it from the command prompt.

IIRC, you can close handles using that tool too. It's kind of like ripping off the wings on fly. Really evil. :evil-cackle: -- It's better to listen to others than to speak, because I already know what I'm going to say anyway. -- Friend of mine

Do a little reg-editing to fix problem with deleting .avi files. This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files. http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/display.asp?id=1467

He just sits on my sholder watching me code. He says very little and it's usually "RAWRR!", which means "I'm hungry." I have noticed my sholder hurting a bit, but he tells me it's nothing to worry about.
