Why do some people think it's cool to have their motorcycle make unbelievably obnoxiously loud noise?

Influence - in the community, loud is assimilated to powerful and performance. Do not underestimate the power of mass consciousness, it is everywhere. At least people who likes Apple do not make noise

Same reason some car owners have loud exhausts that pop and bang on the overrun, and are competing with the doomf-doomf-doomf of their ridiculously loud and distorting in car entertainment. I guess. The latest car craze that I don't get is wheels that lean in at the top at a stupid angle.

I've ridden and raced motorcycles all my life - went to the IOM TT and manx GP about 20 times and never felt the need to make more noise than was absolutely necessary - some people are just dumb

Zackly. I preferred my sports bikes not to attract attention.

Why attract unwanted attention from Mr Plod ? they dislike us enough as it is.

For the same reason that they used to ride motorcycles while crouching over the handlebars - it allows them to believe that they have something between their legs. :)

That's not the owners' fault. The car is simply worn out after a long, hard day on the road. :)

Do they drive past you whilst coding. Are they a common feature in your neck of the woods so as to be a frequent nuisance whilst commuting to favorite coffee shop. I have been fortunate to reside in locales some distance from main roads w/ result small number of traffic. However I am intimately acquainted w/ loud noise. At a prior such residence a quiet condominium w/ exception of insane neighbors on one occasion the grass trimming / cutting was performed w/ a powered hand held device emitting such volume I was unable to hear my own thoughts and had the impression w/o exaggeration a 1,000lb gorilla was in my room. How the operator maintained his hearing I can not imagine. Thankfully as stated it was a one time event. As for insane neighbors I can only hope they reside in the most insane parts of hell.

In a word, yes. My building is situated right on a main road, in fact the only road that leads in and out of my town. I hear everything, police sirens, firetruck sirens, loud cars and loud motorcycles.

I tend to think that it's a lot like an infant with a noisemaker toy.

I live out in the country, just outside a small town with plenty of those rednecks. Long stretch, rather even, repaved not that long ago, hardly any cop to be seen - so some people view it as a drag strip. It's not just bikers, but the kids with their rice-burners as well. It's one thing to hear these during the day, but when it's 2am you just wish them to crash and burn.

That's called "stanced", and is only really doable on cars with IFS and/or IRS suspensions (mostly foreign cars). Not only does it look stupid, but it's highly dangerous since the tire's contact patch is limited to the area where the tires belts meet the sidewall. I get a kick out of it when a car that's done this way is too low to get into a driveway, but the owner doesn't realize it until he's scraped off the front and/or rear bumper fascias and side skirts.

Yes, tell us. What drives you to make so much noise that people wish you would just go away?
