Idiots, they are simply idiots. So, on my new Windows 11 Pro laptop, I was notified that hey, it's time for an update. We estimate 3 minutes apply and reboot. Thinking I might as well get it over with, I say "Rodger dodger." It's been going now for 45 minutes, has rebooted 3 times, and I'm going to bed. I guess this is what happens when your OS is a tightly tangled bowl of spaghetti.

I have to count myself lucky. I've never had an update problem, although a couple of MS updates seemed to mess up my VPN but also seemed to be fixed in short order. And even luckier considering how often Dell wants to update its BIOS. I'd have thought a BIOS would be left alone for longer.

Enough said. Their prebuilts are a miracle of engineering, not for the quality of engineering but because it's a miracle they even work.

For me, every estimate is for 3 minutes. Average is probably actually 20-30 mins.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. If they never release BIOS updates, it feels like the system's turned into abandonware on the day you purchased it. If they release them too frequently, you start wondering what they're doing over there, constantly finding BIOS bugs serious enough they need patching. I almost bricked an expensive printer years ago because of a botched BIOS update. Fortunately there was a rollback procedure - which wasn't easy to follow, but I did manage to revive it on my own. So I always get a little nervous, watching a BIOS upgrade progress bar getting stuck somewhere for a few minutes at a time...

The guy behind the time estimation [just gave up](https://xkcd.com/612/). [Edit] If that guy ever gets cancer and asks how long he has left... (that took a dark turn)

boy, that's the truth. I live in the embedded world, and when you say things like "we need to update the bootloader" swords come out. The bootloader is the bios for us. I think I have updated one BIOS in my lifetime, and I know, if I elephant it up or the update does, I've bricked my system.
