Well, Florida is a mess.

Hey, Griff. You'd be surprised how fast it gets fixed. I wish I could see the data from the power companies. One things utilities do very well is stage their teams for the state about to get hit with whatever. Right now in Florida, you have hundreds of crews from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and of course Florida hitting the power issue (sort of makes me wonder why buried utilities aren't mandatory but I'm ignorant there). The repair process is a triage process. That 6 million will drop very quickly. The pain will be in the outlying areas. The good news - and I use that term lightly - is not too much road damage - unlike Hurricane Helene and western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. This guy Major Hurricane Milton Landfall, As It Happened - YouTube[^] covers weather like a boss. I cannot take "major" news outlets or the Weather Channel any more. I grew up in NC and had my honeymoon in Boone, NC. A couple of years ago, wife and I went up to Boone for our anniversary. It breaks my heart to see the damage, and we don't even know how many more are still buried in mud. :(

I agree with you about the speed at which power is restored. On our way evacuating to Georgia on Monday, we counted over a hndred cherry picker type power restoration trucks rushing to central Florida in anticipation of the looming power outages. I was really impressed. The trash left in the wake of these storms is also cleared up in a week or two, at least in our neck of the woods. It's so nice to live in a civilised, developed country. I know. I grew up in a much less fortunate part of the world.
Ok, I have had my coffee, so you can all come out now!

Money, money, money. The cost to underground is multiple magnitudes more expensive. Hence it is normally only done in expensive areas where someone else is helping to pay (developers) or it’s an area of importance.
