I've been listening a lot of stuff like "even USA was unable to avoid an attack like that", but was it something possible to predict? If you knew in advance that an airplane with a lot of civilians inside was going directly to White House, what would you do??? Even knowing that those terrorists have absolutely NO RESPECT for human life, I never, never thought they have NO LIMITS AT ALL. I'm still in shock... :(( Regards, Wanderley

Not much that could be done once the plane was in the air. If it was a standard hijaking they would eventually land somewhere and make demands. Even if authorities thought they were going to crash the planes somewhere their only option was to shoot the plane down. Not much of an option, they wouldn't have had proof of the intentions of the hijakers and if they had shot the plane down they the authorities would have been the bad guys. It is something that no-one could have forseen, it is an absolute tradgedy and we will all have to wait until the perpetrators have been found. Exactly. Once they were on the plane, nothing could have been done. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

I would be very much concerned once noticing hijacking of four airplanes during one morning. I would definitely use fighters to patrol those planes. Igor Proskuriakov

The talk in the UK is that the security measures on US internal flights are considerably more relaxed than on international flights . This was pointed out by a commision headed by Al Gore (I beleive ) , but the airlines did not want the extra security measures since they would increase delays , lengthen turn around times and so increase costs . But I agree with the comments above , this sort of thing is virtually impossible to prevent once it is in the air. There are airports close to virtually all major cities in the western world, all they have to do is start negotiating in the air , and then take over the plane at the last few moments. Then what do you do ?

Apparently, according to Sky News there were 8 planes and four were shot down. There are some further devisating video footage shots of the planes on CNN's website, they are different angles freom yesterday showing the planes actally hitting the building. ** CARE: These video's are disturbing ** Kind regards to you all.

Yup. I doubt that will be the case anymore. I also doubt it is specific to the American mentality, but nobody here wants to spend money or time on something until somebody dies. Sad but true. I am sure everyone has a story about their local town where some child or high profile person had to die at an intersection before they upgraded the safety of it. Of course, everyone knew it was a dangerous intersection. As far as air hijacking goes, that might not be viable for your traditional terrorist. Now, there is a good chance hijacked planes will be shot down to prevent a more serious tragedy. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

Hmm, I think this is a false report. At one time someone was saying 20 missing planes... In all, 4 planes were lost. 3 were delivered to their targets and 1 was crashed prior to the target. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

Maybe it is about time that all planes had armed security gaurds on the flights and CCTV cameras all over the place. It is ridiculous that once the plane takes off it is so vurnerable and alone. (2b || !2b)

A long term solution could be to design a more secure cockpit. Design the cockpit so that only the pilots have access once people are to begin boarding, and add some armor plating to the door and divider. This won't prevent passengers from being killed or a bomb, but at least the plane can't be used as a missile. Any thoughts? Kind regards, Tim

So, you fix the airplanes to be safer. Next time they poison the water supply or put a nuke on a row boat. We are always going to be vulnerable - *always*
